Let The Quest Begin

Wow, 80's cartoonic entertainment at its best. This childrens fantasy series loosley based on the very popular RPG sees a group of kids get on a Dungeons and Dragons theme park ride and - for some reason emerge in a world of dungeons and funnily enough Dragons.

They are greeted by a small person in a red cloak who gives them magical weapons to help them in their quest to get home

And thats the plot. I was completly bemused by the fact that there is no first episode, the story is all explained in a minute long pre-title sequence. In effect the running order of this first disc doesn't matter, but lets take you through the episodes

THE NIGHT OF NO TOMORROW:
This episod is really the coming of age for the timid new wizard Presto as he is heavily involed in saving townsfolk from a hoard of dragons. With its Scooby Doo esk twist about a wizard with white hare / hair the episode reminds us that we are firmly in the 80s.

THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER:
We are truely in D&D territory now, we have a BEHOLDER one of the best monsters to come from the role playing game (Seen in the 2000 movie and in the 80's movie Big Trouble in Little China). In this episode we have a life lesson as the cowardly knight makes good and the gang show us their selflessness.

THE HALL OF BONES
The weakest episode on the disc.

THE VALLY OF THE UNICORNS:
Great for kids as the story revolves around Uni the cute young unicorn.
Bad for adults as the story revolves around Uni the annoying young unicorn.

IN SEARCH OF THE DUNGEON MASTER:
We see a little more about the tiny cloaked enigma that is Dungeon Master, he is not as powerful as thought

BEAUTY AND THE BOGBEAST:
Best episode on the disc as Eric (the cowardly cavalier) shows that he does have some backbone and his fellows have loyalty to him even though he is often an annoying winger.

THE PRISON WITHOUT WALLS:
Ass kicking fun as the band of travelers end up liberating slaves.

Amazing range of extras considering that this is a budget release, unfortunatly the fan commentary tracks are limited to just two episodes. There are character profiles and if you have a dvdrom on your computer you can read the original series premis and a script.

Cannot wait for volume 2.
