A little better than you might expect

So you've got a low budget, now how do you use it to best advantage?
First off, a closed environment (a small supermarket), next a small cast (about 8 once the extras have been got rid of), a good idea to get the best out of both (one or more of the cast has been taken over by an alien), strong characters, pile on the suspense and break the tension with gory incidents but go easy on the special effects and make the audience wonder if the good guys will not only survive but win and I really did wonder -I won't spoil it for you but I will say that not everyone survives. And, yes you will spot the really bad guy early on but the fun is in watching the bad guy's behaviour for giveaways.
And that's what they did with this neat little and effective sf/horror/thriller which I really rate at three and a half stars. It held me and entertained me for its entire length. The extras are worth watching: 2 behind the scenes pieces, and 3 character video diaries which enhance your appreciation of the movie's scenario.
All in all, a worthwhile time-passer.

Aliens do a Supermarket Sweep

I enjoyed this film I thought it was really good fun. It is pretty much recycling bits and pieces from other films and you must be pretty unfamiliar with these kinds of films if you don't know who "The King" is from the first five minutes. The film has a short running time so its encouraging that it gets on with the story from the word go so there is no padding or worthless character development (you don't need it in films like this!).
I thought the chopping the finger off part was very much like the drug test in the Faculty or the blood test in the Thing.
The cast is solid with TV actors Carlos "24" Bernard and Rockmond "Prison Break" Dunbar but the teen are fairly annoying.
It's certainly not like you normal visit to Tesco thats for sure. If you liked "the Mist" then you will probably like this film too. Its far better then "Chopping Mall"!
Science Fiction

I watched this film and thought it was reasonable
It certainly was'nt as good as I expected it to be
Two star rating for me.
A bit predictable but cheap and cheerful fun

Armed gunmen crash into a small-town supermarket at closing time for an robbery but start singling out certain staff and customers for execution without ever making a grab for any cash. The film's called Alien Raiders so there's no prizes for guessing what the desperadoes' motives are for knocking their victims off - they're aliens who've infected the townies! The hunt is on for the King alien, so he can't knock up any more extraterrestrial hussies...
With generally competent performances, it's low-budget thrills all the way. With few special effects, the actors performances are key to the fun - Carlos Bernard does his thing no problem but the best performance has to be Rockmond Dunbar as the domineering Kane. He hits exactly the right tone trying to keep the fractious hostages in line while things start falling apart. The younger actors are at least reasonable, if occasionally chosen to be easy on the eye rather than talented.
The biggest problem is that it's all pretty predictable. If you've ever seen a sci-fi film before (or have an IQ higher than a squirrel) you'll spot the King at about 10 minutes and spend the rest of the movie screaming at the goodies to stop being such a squad of dunces. There's no real effort made to add any uncertainty or a twist to the ending either but that's part of the fun - it makes you feel superior 'cos you totally spotted it all and you get to bask in smug satisfaction at your acumen and erudition as the credits roll. But you'll probably enjoy getting there.
LOW BUDGET TERROR THAT NEVER QUITE GETS STARTED..

What seems to be a late night robbery in a small US town supermarket ends up being just a bit more when the hostages are having their little fingers cut off by the gun toting gang. They are looking for aliens and someone in building is one and this is the only way to expose the outer space monster. Of course they cut off all the wrong peoples fingers and end up with a monster running amoke in the back of the shops freezer killing everyone it can get its claws on. All very low budget and all been, seen, done before and a lot better. Irritating ending when the good young guy and the "little miss perfect" is sitting in the back of the police car for protection and she says "I always liked you" before turning into the monster the whole of of the towns police force have been looking for.
