Amazon.co.uk Review
The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralysed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent is now dating Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to reprise her role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne. In his last completed role before his tragic death, Ledger is fantastic as the Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the movie: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes facing more colorful villains). Director/co-writer Christopher Nolan (Memento) follows his critically acclaimed Batman Begins with an even better sequel that sets itself apart from notable superhero movies like Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man because of its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism--there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, it's a shade too long, and it's much too intense for kids. But for most movie fans--and not just superhero fans--The Dark Knight is a film for the ages. --David Horiuch

Firstly, I have to admit that I've never been a fan of the Batman series, but this all changed with 'The Dark Knight' and 'Batman Begins' before that.
Christopher Nolan is quite simply a genius, his take on Batman had me on the edge of my seat through the whole movie, some thing that didn't happen with previous Batman movies.
Christian Bale is cast perfect as Bruce Wayne/Batman, but the man who really steals the show is Heath Ledger as The Joker, he was incredible, and apparently Michael Caine forgot his lines, because he couldn't believe how good Heath's Joker was.
I'm definitely looking forward to the next Batman movie.

A Batman that will go down for history.

Me, personally I loved Batman 1989 and Returns and I found that to be a better film than The Dark Knight; but in respects to the fact that it's a unique idea that has totally redeemed Batman solely after Joel Schumacher's futility in the previous 2 movies, I really do appreciate it. It's epic and tense... but maybe a little too tense. Not to be picky by any means. The Joker's plans in this are excellent in this one, and the way how he blows everything out of proportion to show that everybody deep down has a bad side is epic I must say, risking people's lives to prove a point (especially Harvey Dent's) Joker was the best thing in the movie - The deceptiveness, the intelligence, the twists - all justify how awesome this Joker is. The Batman in this movie is... well, he's OK, but he's not as traditional a Batman as I would have anticipated. I mean Bruce Wayne nearly reveals his identity on 3 occasions. I know it was for a good cause as this Batman is more pedantic than previous ones, but still feels strange. The costume is kind of... weird. Not to point out it's flaws or anything, but it just isn't a typical Batman costume and is more original, which isn't bad and all, but doesn't mean that it's better than the 1989 costume either. Characters like Lucius Fox and the new Alfred are played by 2 really good actors, and Lucius is a good idea for this movie, giving Batman new gadgets, costumes and Batarangs - A good way in showing us how he gets his tools. Rachel is a good character, but not as good as Vickie Vale I don't think. She's just a bit bland really. The other characters are really good, the quotes are excellent (unlike Schumacher's movies), the points are brilliant and Batman is still a character who hides in the shadows, but he doesn't do it as much as I had hoped for. Oh yeah and what a brilliant story for the whole thing. It is a little long winded in terms of action (no complaints there!) and in terms of pace. Overall any Batman fan should see it with an open mind (as did I) and... well most people have praised this movie for a new look at Batman so it's no doubt that people who aren't even fans of Batman will like it. In fact, I actually watched this movie without being a fan of Batman and it blew me away and was partially the reason I got so interested in Batman. Highly recommended to fans of Batman, deep story lines and action sequences.
A great film

I bought this DVD when it came out, but my fiance and I have only just got round to watching it. I had heard good things about it, so although it is not my usual sort of thing, I was quite excited to watch it.
It started so well and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. The visual effects were so well put together, I couldn't tear my eyes away from the screen. Heath Ledger was fantastic as The Joker. I found him to be both repulsing and comical at the same time. But, the star of the show for me was Christian Bale as Batman. Not having watched anything with him in before, I think he is a brilliant actor and played the part so well. Perhaps the hype surrounding Heath, due to tragic circumstances at the time, took away from this a bit.
It did lose a star for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it was far too long with no real conclusive ending. I got bored about half an hour from the end. Secondly, the plot started to get a bit 'samey' as we went on.
All in all, a great film which I would recommend to everyone. It's not my usual sort of thing but I really enjoyed it.
Less talking please

This is one of Christopher Nolan's best films, with incredible special effects and the like. But sometimes there are some complications in the dialogs, witch are sometimes hard to understand, and there is in this film sometimes a terrible lack of action, in witch case you often get bored to death. So, less speaking and more action, Mr Nolan.
A classic for our time

Christopher Nolan has given us what we always wanted, This icon of a movie blew me away, if you think it was too long, sorry, I disagree, I was hooked from opening to closing credits, Nolan continues his exploration and expansion of the batman character, and does so with devestatingly good effect, Heath Ledger (RIP) really gave his all for this and it is a crowning achievement for what would be his last full involvement in a movie.
The main point for me though was humanity( ferry scene) and how both citizen and criminal alike did not bow to the extreme pressure they were put under, and that they were willing to go the distance against the odds, so many lessons here for people to learn from.
Christian Bale's Batman also taking the brunt of what happens shows how Batman is capable of being the hero people want, whether or not it is good for his image, blah blah image!! he does it for the people of gotham,
On a final note stand up all involved with this film, and take a bow, you have earned it
