Starring: Belen Rueda, Fernando Cayo, Geraldine Chaplin, £24.99 It tells the story of a woman, Laura, returning to the orphanage where she was raised as a child. Her plans are to look after sick children there, but it doesn’t take long for things to go awry. Without giving too much away, visions from her past and a threat to her own family are the starting points for a complex and quite haunting thriller, that stays in the mind long after the credits have rolled. A film that works on more than one level, The Orphanage really is some piece of work. Juan Antonia Bayona, behind the camera, generates an incredibly atmospheric mood that underpins the film, and wisely takes time to put pieces in place. He’s aided by a terrific cast, and an unsettling screenplay that layers in an uneasy horror that’s as anti-Hollywood as it comes. The result of all of this is one of the scariest films of recent times, and yet something that still manages to be that little bit more, that sticks in your mind for some time afterwards. Make no mistake, The Orphanage really is something different, and all the better for it. --Jon Foster

Amazon.co.uk Review
Backed by Guillermo del Toro and yet made by a surprisingly inexperienced group of film makers (especially considering the end result), The Orphanage is a chilling, tense supernatural thriller that could certainly teach more established directors a thing or two about how to send shivers down the spine.
Best horror movie I have seen
Review date: 2010-06-07 Rating: 10 out of 10
This is on the best horror movies that I have ever seen. It keeps you in suspense, unable to leave, not even to go to the lu because you are so engaged in the movie. The plot thickens and keeps getting more interesting. Very interesting twist at the end. Definite must see. Although it is in Spanish... so you have to be in the mood to read subtitles.
The Orphanage [Blu-ray] [2007] Reviews
A very touching film
Review date: 2010-05-11 Rating: 8 out of 10
Described as an old fashioned ghost story, The Orphanage mostly lives up to that claim. I say mostly, because my interpretation of the movie takes the ghost out of the film. Not that that's a bad thing - quite the opposite! It did have all the necessities for an original ghost story - cute but slightly scary children, a very strange looking old woman and a big empty building. I liked the use of minor gore really sparingly in the film. I can count the moments that there was a horrifying image on one hand, which is a good thing. So many horror movies these days rely on the use of gore for the scares. To me this film was less about the scares/ghost story aspect and more about the loss of a child and how a mother copes with that. Very touching.
Ghost story, Yes - Scary, No
Review date: 2010-04-11 Rating: 8 out of 10
A very engrossing ghost story with plenty of plot twists and turns. The central character is believeable and the pace is quite even throughout the film. However, if you are expecting big scares then it is not that sort of film. There is also a slight flaw in the story at the scene where she uses the doorknob - as the seal is unbroken. Enjoyable all the same and better than most.
chilling
Review date: 2010-04-04 Rating: 10 out of 10
This was sitting on my shelf for a while before I finally watched, all because I usually dislike watching foreign-language films. However I was pleasantly surprised and found it easy to follow, barely noticing I was reading subtitles.
I was expecting more violence, gore and "made you jump" moments, not having heard much about the film. However, the horror is present throughout most of the film as a chilling atmosphere that develops as the story unfolds. It centres around the main character Laura, whose son goes missing when she returns to run the orphanage where she grew up.
Although I am not usually a fan of the supernatural, in this film it is believable and had me hanging on to my boyfriend! I especially liked the ending, as it was both happy and sad but also clever.
proper scary movie
Review date: 2009-12-24 Rating: 10 out of 10
i really enjoyed this movie as there was none of your usual gore and blood. it was just scary and quite jumpy in parts. similar in parts to the others(nicole kidman) with a big house and creaking doors. its a spanish movie but you forget the subtitles are even there after a couple of minutes. great storyline and great ending. iwatched it on dvd but have since purchased it on bluray to add to my collection and its worth the few extra quid for bluray defo.
