I have a mult-region dvd player which I highly recommend for anyone building dvd library. I had originally rented it as I didn't have cable tv when the show came out here in the States. But I liked it enough to buy it--the British dvd was priced lower than here in the States. That said I was sooooo disappointed that there was only one season of the show. The dvd picks up somewhere in time past the end of the third movie where Blade rolls off into the distance. He's back in his old hometown taking down vampires with a new sidekick and a bunch of new enemies. I'm not into rap music so I had and still have no idea who Sticky Fingz is, playing the part of Blade but he manages to pull it off. By the way, the 90min. pilot is on this disc as well as all of the tv episodes. Too bad Goyer jumped to "Flashfoward" I wish he'd go back and do more Blade.Blade - The Complete Series [DVD] [2007]
Blade - The Complete Series [DVD] [2007] Reviews
Good fun with a strong plot and some characters you care about
Review date: 2010-02-17 Rating: 10 out of 10
The series largely fits with the films. So vampires react to silver and sunlight, vampirism is essentially a disease etc. There are some differences between the mythology in the films and the series which will annoy geeks but generally it's pretty much the same idea as the films with the longer running time allowing a greater development of some of the characters and ideas.
Jill Wagner plays a tough and sexy Iraq veteran who comes home to find her brother has been murdered in what appears to be a gang related incident. We see the killing at the begining and therefore know that he is a familiar of a group of vampires who have lost patience with him. After the police seem unwilling to help she starts her own investigations which lead her into the world of vampires and Blade himself (played I thought quite well by Sticky Fingaz - probably not his real name). Bitten, she is fighting the growing bloodlust whilst working with Blade to uncover a conspiracy in the House of Cthon - a vampire noble house which seems to be trying to develop a super vampire immune to silver etc.. There are other subplots for example a gang killing vampires and peddling their ashes as a euphoric drug, a cop investigating murders by 'monsters', another cop who is determined such murders will not be investigated and some insights into Blade's early life (which I don't think fit with the films as I recall).
The ideas are good and the suave English villain is excellent. He has depth and one can't help but wonder whether he's not at heart a goody - he mostly just kills vampires after all. The sinister child who seems to head the family is very creepy as is her hulking, seemingly mute bodyguard. Blade himself is pretty good though he's not Wesley Snipes and for fans of the original that may be a problem. Jill Wagner is excellent. A few of the minor characters are a bit naff but otherwise the cast is great.
The vampire world with its turfwars and codes of conduct is well realized. The theme from the first movie of the noble purebloods being envied by their second class human converts is nicely played out and the deceit and backbiting within the vampire house (who are effectively a mafia family with genuine family and made men) is ever present. There are nice touches such as a vegetarian vampire house who are pretty much hippies, a psycho no one wants and a vampire brothel.
The action is pretty good. In places it's pretty gritty actually. It's a TV series so obviously it doesn't have the budget of something like the Die Hard films but in some ways being unable to have exploding helicopters in every episode actually makes it a lot better as the violence and action is more tautly controlled and therefore feels more realistic and more engaging.
I enjoyed this a lot. It's not perfect. In places it is a little confused and it does take while to get going but when the pieces start to fall into place it is a really good show.

Was a fan of Blood Ties so bought this series, and was definately not disappointed. The only downside being that they cancelled the series and there is no continuation of the gripping storyline. Would highly recommend this dvd.
Better Than The Films
Review date: 2008-12-07 Rating: 10 out of 10
I am not a huge Blade fan (although the second film was pretty good) and to be honest I only picked this up because it was cheap & a friend had recommended it to me....Boy, am I glad he did. This is excellent, Sticky Fingaz interpretation of Blade is far darker than that of Wesley Snipes & the action/fighting scenes are superb, much better than the at times cartoonish martial arts of the films. The story line, which arcs through all the episodes, is great, chief villain Marcus is a complex charachter rather than a cardboard cut-out & his boss Charlotte is truly scary. All this plus the gorgeous Jill Wagner...what more could you want? Actually, thinking about it, what I really want is a second series!
