Amazon.co.uk Review
Will Smith stars in the third adaptation of Richard Matheson’s classic science-fiction novel about a lone human survivor in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by vampires. This new version somewhat alters Matheson’s central hook, i.e., the startling idea that an ordinary man, Robert Neville, spends his days roaming a desolated city and his nights in a house sealed off from longtime neighbours who have become bloodsucking fiends. In the new film, Smith’s Neville is a military scientist charged with finding a cure for a virus that turns people into crazed, hairless, flesh-eating zombies. Failing to complete his work in time, and after enduring a personal tragedy, Neville finds himself alone in Manhattan, his natural immunity to the virus keeping him alive. With an expressive German shepherd, his only companion, Neville is a hunter-gatherer in sunlight, hiding from the mutants at night in his Washington Square town house and methodically conducting experiments in his ceaseless quest to conquer the disease. The film’s first half almost suggests that I Am Legend could be one of the finest movies of 2007. Director Francis Lawrence’s extraordinary, computer-generated images of a decaying New York City reveal weeds growing through the cracks of familiar streets that are also overrun by deer and prowled by lions. It’s impossible not to be fascinated by such a realistically altered cityscape, reverting to a natural environment, through which Smith moves with a weirdly enviable freedom, offset by his wariness over whatever is lurking in the dark of bank vaults and parking garages. Lawrence and screenwriters Mark Protosevich and Akiva Goldsman wisely build suspense by withholding images of the monsters until a peak scene of horror well into the story. It must be said, however, that the computer-enhanced creatures don’t look half as interesting as they might have had the filmmakers adhered more to Matheson’s vampire-nightmare vision. I Am Legend is ultimately noteworthy for Smith’s remarkable performance as a man so lonely he talks to mannequins in the shops he frequents. The film’s latter half goes too far in portraying Smith’s Neville as a pitiable man with a messianic mission, but this lapse into pathos does nothing to take away from the visual and dramatic accomplishments of its first hour. --Tom Keogh

The best case you'll find in the market, but there are two problems regarding this product. One of them, actually, appears in 95% of the DVDs: the region lock. The second is the lack of subtitle options. Come on, subtitle files are so small, please give us more options.
Back to the region lock thing, I understand the reasons for the companies to use it, but some editions are not available everywhere. I live in Brazil, and I can find this movie for a reasonable price here, but NOT IN STEELBOOK. Now I bought this one, but can't play it in either my DVD player or my PS3 (they're both Sony's and Sony products can not be unlocked via firmware). So I'll buy another player to watch my imported movies, or either make copies of my movies and my friends', which would be piracy.

I Am Legend (2 Disc Special Edition) [2007] [DVD] Reviews
Yes. I agree.

The first half of the film was quite a nerve racking beginning and the pace built and built after.
However, the pace was far too quick and in the second half of the film, it was felt that the story was rushed. They had a good idea but felt they needed to wrap it up quickly which was always going to have a negative impact.
The world created here, though, is extemely perceptive and engaging and the first time you glimpse the monster (not a spoiler- there are obviously monsters in the film), you do feel fear for Robert Neville, who was played brilliantly by Will Smith. Moreover, the film, as an action film ticked the boxes, but not as a horror. It was as though the first half was horror and the second action. I would have prefered horror all the way as the scene created was perfect to do so.
In summary, it was a great film, let down by a hasty plot and underdeveloped enemies.
Uncomfortable viewing

This film grabbed mis cojones and held on until the very end, which is probably why I didn't enjoy it much - that is to say for its entertainment value, though as a horror movie it certainly did its job! There were a few glaring holes in the storyline, but hey, that's Hollywood. The book (I think) dates to the 1950's and is supposed to be excellent?
He is so-so

In many respects this is little more than a star vehicle and although Smith gives a strong enough performance as the gun-toting, iron-pumping hero he is never convincing as the desperate scientist trying to save the human race. As the third film version of Richard Matheson's novel this movie strays pretty far from the original material, but that's par for the course with Hollywood adaptations. Some of Neville's personal torment is retained and Smith portrays this well, but apart from this and the basic premise there is little from the book that remains. On the other hand they've shoehorned in a bunch of flashbacks that are clunky and largely superfluous. That said this is entertaining when considered simply as a thrill ride, and the depiction of New York city as an overgrown, derelict ghost town is particularly well realised.
Never read the book first

I enjoyed this film but as is often the case having read the book on which its based years ago I can't help thinking that somehow the plot of the film focuses on different aspects of the scenario compared to the book. Such is life and film making.
I have to say I felt the ending appeared to have been made in a bit of a rush. Nice film anyway and bought at a very fair price.
