Starring: Angelica Lee, Chutcha Rujinanon, Lawrence Chou, £7.99 Hong Kong directors Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang have not made another generic horror in the wake of Ring, nor an ultra-violent picture in the style of Battle Royale. A clearer comparison is with The Sixth Sense, but unlike M Night Shyamalan's film The Eye uses stunning visual effects to evoke a deeper sense of the unknown and a deeper understanding of death without the trappings of Christianity (here suicide does not lead to eternal damnation). Ultimately, The Eye is a supernatural suspense story, with Mun turning detective and learning a little more than she bargained for about her own mortality. On the DVD:The Eye offers a short (eight-minute) "making of" documentary which is extended further in the Pang Brothers documentary. As with all Tartan products the disc is full of trailers, but has some added value with Justin Bowyer's film notes. There is the option to play the film without English subtitles, and the subtitles have been improved in contrast to earlier Tartan releases by the addition of a black rim around the italics. Sound and vision are exceptional and will certainly add to any jumpy reactions. Let's hope this one also gets the two-disc special edition treatment in the future. --Nikki Disney

Amazon.co.uk Review
The Eye ("Jian gui") incorporates a very old suspicion that has prevented many people from ticking the "cornea" section on their Donor card. From the age of two, Mun (Angelica Lee) has been blind and has learnt to live her life through her other four senses, but after a cornea operation she discovers she has a "sixth sense". As her sight slowly returns she notices shadowy figures prowling around her that are definitely not normal human beings. So begins a quest for the eye donor, during which Mun discovers that people's superstitions still remain as strong as ever.
Petrifying!

Definitly not one to watch alone. Also watching in the dark could cause a heart attack. It's about a blind woman who has her site restored but begins seeing ghastly appartitions and attempts to find out why.
Any fan of world cinema will lap this up.From it's opening to it's end.
The Eye [2002] [DVD] Reviews
Very disappointing
Review date: 2009-01-21 Rating: 4 out of 10
I'm sorry but that was rubbish. Just finished watching it about 10 minutes ago and I must say that I did not find it chilling in the least. I bought this film having read all the positive reviews on Amazon and I therefore expected a really good horror film, as I love the more creepy, suspenseful and dread-ridden movies... What I got was anything but that. The scariest part in the film - no, let me rephrase that - the only scary part in the film, for me, was the caligraphy class scene where I was shocked for a moment and the breath went out from my lungs. But apart from that I'm afraid that The Eye was just a poor effort in terms of terror; oherwise it's not a bad film. A good story, a believable main character, nice effects/camerawork/direction etc.
I expect that those who are not proper horror movie fans or have never seen an Asian horror film will probably find this utterly terrifying. Personally, I found the remake of The Grudge A LOT scarier than this, and I own pretty much all the best classic horrors under the sun, being a collector, and don't frighten easily. "The scariest film since The Excorcist"? I think not. But yeah, I'd say it is worth seeing; just be prepared to be a little bit bored...
Scary Horrorshow? I don't think so.

Am I missing something here? I had to check and double check that the movie I just watched was the same movie that had been given five stars by several people. Five stars for this? I almost fell asleep throughout the first half of the film, but fought it and continued to watch, hoping that it would improve. It did, slightly, but I continued to yawn all through the remainder of the movie.
I don't want to say it was tripe, for fear of offending those who enjoyed it, but it was slow, monotonous, had a weak story line and should not be included in the 'Horror' genre, simply because it was not even slightly scary. As the credits rolled at the end, I thought, "Was that it?"
You might like it as many others have done, but I would say forget it. It's not all it's cracked up to be - and certainly doesn't justify its 15 certificate.
Great Asian Classic

Gonna keep this short and simple, if you like asian horror movies and havnt seen this then buy it now. This movie is without doubt one of the top asian horror movies out there and the second one is just as good in my opinion too, cant imagine any asian movie fans not liking this movie.
p.s. Dont watch the third one.. its a joke!
Hit and miss

As concepts go, this is a pretty interesting one - sure, there have been a few "malfunctioning transplant" movies and stories, but they don't come around very often. I like the idea of body parts retaining their previous owner's characteristics...pure nonsense, of course, but it makes for an entertaining tale.
The story works quite well, and will keep you fairly interested throughout. The film succeeds as a drama, but sadly fails as a horror.
I like creepy, unsettling films and I have been impressed with the last decade or so of Far Eastern horror...but The Eye falls short of its scarier cousins. It simply isn't scary, in the slightest. There's no sense of danger or threat, no air of menace, and the ghosts are either plain or pitiful. You feel sorry for some of them, but they don't scare you.
I was very disappointed, having picked up a film billed as being absolutely pants-wettingly terrifying and finding it to be so tame. While I do wonder what other people found so frightening about it, I can't call it a bad film overall. By all means, watch it if you get a chance, but don't go looking for it, or expect to have any sleepless nights.
