An enjoyable low-budget kidnap horror
Review date: 2010-08-05 Rating: 6 out of 10
This is a curious film - it's marketting suggests a much more violent, gory movie, but in fact it's more of a battle of wits. Having been kidnapped without explanation, our heroine finds herself trapped in a makeshift woodland campsite where her tormentor expects her to look after him without question, without any idea if her daughter is alive or dead. It's clear it was shot on a low budget, but the director makes the most of what he has, and there are some nicely tense moments. The bad guy is played well, and I ended up rooting for the heroine. Some of the shocks are squirm inducing, but this is mainly about the atmosphere, and if you let this take effect you'll find a slow but enjoyable psychological horror.
Broken [2006] [DVD] Reviews
Excellent Film.
Review date: 2010-06-09 Rating: 8 out of 10
The bad reception this film seems to have gotten is bewildering to me. Yes, it could go into the "torture porn" envelope but that would be narrow sighted. Broken is a tense, nerve shredding horror with superb acting and direction.
The film would get 5 stars but for a slight lag in the middle and a few instances of stupid character syndrome.
Well done to the film makers. I will be on the lookout for more from Adam Mason.
Yet another dismal low-budget torture gorno
Review date: 2009-12-18 Rating: 2 out of 10
Yet another dismal low-budget torture gorno. Now I'm all for a bit of gore and cheap shocks. But I also want to be entertained. I'm afraid this is just boring. I did think my luck was in because the opening sequence is truly amazing! With some fine brutal gore FX. Sadly that is the highlight of the film. What follows is pure nonsense. The plot is unintelligent. Actually I tell a lie. What I was supposed to say is what plot? We see a woman on a date, next scene she in some woods being tormented by a mad man, without any explanation? For the next hour it's all crying and screaming. No character development is attempted. We are just required to watch the abducted woman clean pots and pans and tend to a vegetable patch, with occasional dim-witted dialog. Even when a school girl is added into the mix, you still don't get the satisfaction of knowing what the hell is going on? Directors Simon Boyes and Adam Mason clearly have woman issues. The two captive women are abused and treated like crap. And portrayed as dim-witted idiots, who don't even escape when they get chance. And don't think that the ending will clarify anything? Just know that this really is a meaningless pile of garbage.
If There Were Oscars For Horror films
Review date: 2009-07-23 Rating: 10 out of 10
If there were Oscars for horror films then this one would win Best Male Lead, Best Female Lead, Best Director, Best Script and Best Locations.
I've seen a lot of horror films in my time, From Jess Franco to Dario Argento. From Herschel Gordon-Lewis to George Romero to Rob Zombie, and I have to say that "Broken" ranks very high on my personal list of "Good Horror Films".
I find it hard to fault this film. In parts it is gut-wrenchingly nasty and the ending took me completely by surprise. It is remorseless in the way that "I Spit On your Grave" was. It never really lets up. Eric Colvin as "The Man" gives us a screen psycho that makes Norman Bates look like Norman Wisdom and the lead female, Nadya Brand presnets an entirely credible character who had me rooting for her from the very beginning. Okay, you could say that the main plot is predicatable, but it is so much more than the basic, "man kidnaps woman, man sadistically hurts woman, woman kills man" but "Broken" is SO much more than that.
I cannot fault this film. It's the best I've seen in some considerable time. In terms of modern hooror films, only "Mum and Dad" comes close to "Broken". And it proves conclusively that it IS possible to make good, low budget horror.
For the little it's going to cost you - buy it and see for yourself. I reckon that "Broken" will, in time, prove to be a real, genuine "cult" film.
Sadistic nonsense
Review date: 2009-04-26 Rating: 4 out of 10
Some films are more deserving of the 18 cert than others, and this certainly goes beyond the boundaries of most 18 cert films. In my opinion there ought to be another classification for this sort of film to set it apart from the other milder cert 18 films. There is no plot. Supposedly it is "based on a true story." No explanation of that is given and I find it hard to believe. It is graphic, mindless violence and contains sickening torture scenes. Some very disturbing scenes, the end is both shocking and very disappointing. You want so much for the woman to get away and find her daughter and then when it all comes to an end it is an anti-climax. She had plenty of opportunities to kill the man. Another problem I had with this film is the horrific injuries this woman and others suffer. Surely they would've bled to death or gone into shock. Pain is enough to kill some people. I am concerned about the mentality of the writers and the producers who make this sort of film. There is nothing enjoyable about it, unless you are a fan of this type of violence/torture film. I only watched to the end because I hoped for a satisfying ending. It wasn't delivered.
I would say don't buy it. It is not worthwhile to add to your collection.
