Not viewed the film yet, but I did test both disks and they seem OK.
Product arrived earlier than expected, so I would buy from this seller again.
Ran [DVD] [1985] Reviews
Kurosawa's Ran
Review date: 2009-12-03 Rating: 10 out of 10
This copy of Kurosawa's Ran was very reasonably priced and brand new. I needed a copy of the film because I was teaching it for a university course in adaptations of Shakespeare, and Ran is in part based on King Lear, although it draws on an episode in thirteenth century Japanese history too. It's a magnificent film - I have to admit I chose to teach it because I admire it so much. Visually it's a masterpiece: every camera angle is perfectly judged; the dialogue, much of which Kurosawa wrote, is minimalist, stark as the story. Watch out for the Buddhist symbolism and martial way ethos. A wonderful film - and all of the students wanted their own copies!

Massively powerful. Brilliantly photographed. Directing so many extras must have been a Herculean task. Awesomely violent battles. Far better than any war film made in Hollywood with the exception of Saving Private Ryan.
Qualty of image

Sadly the image quality is not noticeably better than the DVD version that I have. The packaging is good and the extras are good but that's not really the point is it? I have older films than Ran on Blu-ray and you can certainly see that the movie company has done all they can to make the film look worthy of Blu-ray release with those films. I look forward to the day when film companies are more honest about the 'product' they release. Please lift your game Studio Canal.
Kurosawa's Masterpiece ?
Review date: 2009-10-30 Rating: 10 out of 10
In my opinion there are three films which could qualify as the great Japanese director's masterpiece. Seven Samurai, Rashamon and Ran, but whichever of these you favour it doesn't really matter because they are all great movies. Although the DVD release of Ran was a good transfer this Blue-ray is an improvement and makes the viewing of this great movie even more of a pleasure.
