Whilst it doesn't quite, and nor did it need to, perform the major surgery that Batman Begins had to undertake on the Dark Knight's adventures, Singer nonetheless leaves distance between his film and some of its predecessors (although there are respectful tips of the hat to the first two films, not least the nostalgia-inducing credits sequence). The plot finds Superman returning to Earth after several years away, to discover that the world has moved on in his absence. It's not as safe, Lex Luthor is out of prison, and Lois Lane now has a family. Which is the cue for a lot of soul searching, slower, tender moments and character development that divided some sections of the cinema audience. Yet, thanks to a stirring cast, led by newcomer Brandon Routh, the end product gels extremely well. Routh's performance is a fitting tribute to the late Christopher Reeve, while Kevin Spacey chews up anything he's allowed to as key villain Lex Luthor. Further, credible, support comes in the form of Parker Posey, James Marsden and Kate Bosworth. It'd be remiss to call Superman Returns a flawless film. After all, the running time could use fifteen minutes taking off, there's not enough Kevin Spacey and there are occasional moments when the pacing feels a little off. But it is a superb return to form for the classic superhero, with the modern day blockbuster ingredients of some meat to go with the action firmly in place. Further instalments, Mr Singer, will be more than welcome. --Simon Brew

It's fair to say that Superman Returns probably wasn't quite the blockbuster many were expecting. It concentrates its action on a handful of dazzling, audacious sequences, it spends time working with its characters, and it deliberately pays homage to the heritage of the source material. Knitted together by Bryan Singer, the man behind the camera for the first two X-Men features, it's some distance away from the last time the Man of Steel appeared on the big screen.

I am so disappointed that the planned trilogy has been scrapped. Brandon Routh was fantastic in the lead role and I wanted to see so much more of Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor. This movie had everything, action, romance, fantastic special effects and a great cast. What more could anyone ask for?

Could have been so much better, and not enough special features

On paper, this movie was sure to be a hit: directed by Bryan Singer who pretty much started the comic book movie genre with X-Men, an unknown actor Brandon Routh as Superman instead of a lame Hollywood actor, Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor and enough budget to buy a small country.
However, the reality is that Singer, who I highly respect as a director, made this film as a continuation of the Christopher Reeve film series and while I enjoyed those films, Singer doesn't give himself enough free reign with this film and it leaves you feeling like it's something you've already seen before. Even though everything has been improved upon since Christopher Reeve last put on the iconic cape and tights, Singer hasn't made another smash hit wonder with Superman Returns, and things do get worse.
Superman returns to Earth after a seven year long absence and proceeds to stalk Lois Lane and I do mean STALK, he flies around her house at night and uses his X-Ray vision to spy on her and her new family. Speaking of Lois Lane, Kate Bosworth's acting is appalling, her acting is as compelling as taking out the trash, and Parker Posey, Lex Luthor's girlfriend/henchwoman, is just annoying in every scene she's in. In addition, a result of Superman and Lois Lane's relationship contradicts everything in the Superman comics and it just doesn't work on film.
There are good points however, Brandon Routh is a compelling Superman but isn't able to make the role his own with the material he's given, and Kevin Spacey makes a sinister Luthor and his agenda is similar to and as diabolical as Gene Hackman's Luthor in the original films.
Despite being a 2 disk set, this product was missing the one thing I was looking for: the return to Krypton! There was supposed to be a whole sequence involving Superman's return to the remains of Krypton, but it got cut from the final version of the film so I was looking forward to seeing them in the special features. However, despite there being three hours of special features and deleted scenes, they're all additional material to what's already in the feature film and nothing that's been taken out entirely.
This film was good and has a lot a potential to have a sequel, but if Brian Singer does come back to direct, I hope he'll focus less on directing like Richard Donner and bring his own style to the series. It's what made X-Men so good to watch, and it would have improved this film significantly.
Far too long

I must admit that Superman has never been one of my favourite spandex-clad do-gooders but I do quite like the original Superman I & II films. This latest film is very disappointing. Brandon Routh does a reasonable Christopher Reeve impersonation but Kate Bosworth's Lois Lane is shockingly bad. The plot is incoherent and the film is far too long, spending inordinate amounts of time focusing on mawkish sentimentality. The effects are good (especially when Superman gets shot point-blank in the eyeball) but I'd rather have my brains scooped out by a blind monkey with a blunt spoon than watch this again.
A new beginning...

Though there have been so many comic-to-film translations recently, the original late 'seventies Superman film has always remained the best. Could this new film in a well loved franchise compete?
The film begins with comforting familiarity; the way the credits fly across the screen, the re-working of the fantastic John Williams theme, and the crash landing to Earth of Clark Kent.
In fact - things seem eerily familiar! The uncanny likeness to Gene Hackman that Kevin Spacey gives to Lex Luthor is almost scary. He manages to get every mannerism to capture the character perfectly - whilst adding his own trademark dark edge. The film is perfectly cast with everyone faithfully expressing a near facsimile of the original cast, well, everyone but Lois Lane that is. When Clark Kent speaks, it could easily be Christopher Reeves on the screen - it really is quite astonishing.
As usual Lex Luthor is up to no good, and with his plan to create new land masses, I suppose you could say that there's terror forming (terraforming, geddit?!!). This gives us a chance to get some good action scenes into the film without dwelling on them too much. The film concentrates more on the relationship between Superman and Lois, and although Lois isn't the character I remember from the original films, she does start to become more plucky as the film progresses, and a twist in the plot leads us to believe that there's a bond between the two that can't be broken.

its 29dec and this film is on TV right now but instead i sit here and write this because i cannot watch such dross after going through my Reeve boxset last week again (plus donner cut)
let me start off by saying that im a big fan of comic book movies and the Donner superman films is are my opinion fantastic movies with great character magnetism which is shown by Kidder,Hackman and Reeve which this film lacks
Yes everone knows Routh was hired for looking like Reeve but you can never replace a classic
There is no passion about this movie as its flat its almost as if no one cared and knew it was going to be a dud but too late!
There are certain things that point to the earlier Superman movies but to use the same dialogue word for word in parts is truly shamefull
The thing that made the original films so good is the lack of CGI - yes you heard me LACK OF CGI, the Donners had great optical effects which worked and here it all just seems to be plastic even down to certain scenes Supe himself is obvious CGI
what a shame that the money men cant just leave a classic alone and move on !!!!
