Lovers of The Royale Family will love this too.
Review date: 2008-10-27 Rating: 10 out of 10
I can't fault Creature Comforts clips, they're superb and I can't begin to understand how the creators get their ideas for the animated characters to match the real 'vox pop' voices and load them with so much irony and humour. Some of the comments and opinions expressed by the human subjects are so sad they're really funny, and Aardman subtley pokes lots of fun where fun's due. Lovers of The Royale Family will love this too.
I also really enjoyed the 'making of' video showing the scenes being acted out as a guide for the animators, side-by-side with the finished result. Both amusing and interesting.
My only criticisms, and they're small ones, are firstly that I think there's some overlap with the Part 1 video as I had a definite sense of deja vu on a couple of clips, although I haven't checked (could have been the memory of the original transmission, but I missed most of them). Secondly the Heat Electric adverts were rendered very poorly, like an nth-generation VHS tape - I've got them on the Aardman Classics DVD and I'm sure they're a cleaner copy. That's a good DVD too by the way!
Creature Comforts, Series 1 Part 2 [DVD] [2003] Reviews
The British Public at its best - another great helping
Review date: 2004-05-12 Rating: 10 out of 10
Everyone now has had a chance to gripe about how awful it was of Aardman to only include six episodes of their sensational new series 'Creature Comforts' on its Christmas DVD release. So now that the remaining seven episodes have finally made it to the shelves, it's high time to put all cynicism aside and just sit back and thoroughly enjoy. This is, after all, one of the most astounding examples of animation to come out of the new millennium - innovative, witty, wry and brought to life with superb claymation techniques.
Based on some of Aardman's previous creations, once again we are treated to a round of voices and viewpoints from the Great British Public, each one taken from actual interview recordings and matched up to an animal character - and every time the matching of voice to animal is so aptly done, so that even dullest of human dialogue is given a whole new meaning. Topics covered on this DVD include evolution, seaside holidays, UFOS and the ever-ongoing 'cats or dogs' debate, with inputs from recurring characters like Trixie the dog, Fluffy the hamster and Captain Cuddlpuss the cat. Don't overlook the more minor critters though - as always some of the most memorable moments come from them. I particularly love the amusing debate in one episode between a Boston terrier and a stick insect over which creature makes the better pet, a snail attempting to escape from ending up as a bird's dinner, a young guinea pig discribing his python neighbour, and two swallows discussing some of the injuries they've endured whilst flying. Also recommended is the hilarious aliens episode, in which extra-terrestrials give their views on life in the UK, and the Christmas special which allowed this fantastic first series to end itself on a very high note indeed.
In terms of extras, this DVD includes most of the adverts from the previous 'Creature Comforts' Heat Electric campaign (not the complete set, but it's still good) and an array of miscellaneous extra TV footage that's well worth checking out, including a short feature specially made for promoting the National TV Awards.
In short, this is a brilliant addition to the 'Creature Comforts' cannon. Snap it up and laugh until your sides split. And don't forget to keep your eyes peeled - this is Aardman here, so expect 'background jokes' galore!!
