I agree with another reviewer I too was left feeling sad and empty at the end of the film,(if your looking for sugar coated endings look elshwhere and there is plenty of mengless comerical cineman that is happy to play it's part in kepping the neo con's and hypocrits happy. Carnial Knowledge is a piece of cinema that shows that not everything in life can be resolved to the guide of a morale compass.) but I still enjoyed this trip into these characters lives.
This is by no means an easy film to watch and you should come to it with an open mind, the characters are not innocent or easily defined, but believable real people you would expect to exist in real life. Made in 1971 the sentiment and dialogue is relevant of today as it was then.
The role of Jonathon is saved from being a non symphetic part by Nicolson's screen presence and moments of melancholic introspection. Garfunkel plays well in tune with Nicholson's Alpha male character his angelic tones.
In this film's case the script is really the thing here but the film is enhanced by Nicols use of an urban New York setting for the two leads expected decline into middle aged aimless philandering and self pity. The women in the film are victims of their own making.
The best film about male bonding and peruit of casual relationship's espescialy considring the era it was made in now days film's believable characters and grity dilouge are the norm cliche but these guys like Nichols really were the inevator's( all free men over the age of thirty should watch this they might not like what they see could for most be like looking into a mirror) since I'm sure most of us (men) have unintenonlly played the role of either a Sandy or Jonathon in our life's in the pursuit off?
If you liked Day's of Wine and Roses and About last Night then this film's theme might resonate with you.

The story opens in the fifties, and Jonathan (Jack Nicholson) and Sandy (Arthur Garfunkle) are college freshmen with one thing on their minds. Jonathan is confident and cool; Sandy is timid and naive. Their deed-doing adventures soon begin but as we follow them over the next twenty years, we see they still haven't figured women out at all.
This movie was considered very risqué in 1971, and still retains some shock value from the gritty and passionless way the two men talk about and experience the opposite sex. Though Nicholson was in his thirties, he still pulls off being a giggling college freshman. As his character ages, he becomes the bitter and worldly-wise man he's played so often and so well. Garfunkle (then a wildly successful folk singer) was a good choice as the bumbling young man who needs his roommate's prodding to go all the way with his girl (a lovely, young Candice Bergen). Ann-Margret was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Jonathan's tarty, miserable lover.
I didn't like the movie much because of its unresolved episodic scenes and the callous approach to what women would call "romance." Although I can see its place in movie history as a barrier-breaking, in-your-face film about things people didn't really talk about back then, it still left me feeling sad and empty.

Mike Nichols captivated the cinema world with The Graduate and returned with this film of sexual angst over a twenty year period. Jack Nicholson dominates in his role as the selfish and ultimately self destructive Jonathan but veers towards being over the top in his bullying, self pitying rages. Art Garfunkel, as his friend, plays wonderfully but is overwhelmed by Nicholson's raw energy and emotion.
Candice Bergen never really strikes me as right but Ann-Margret is brilliant as the girl who Nicholson destroys. Worth seeing - of course - worth putting in your top 100 ???????????
Text book for the failure of the opposite sex.

How long have i been searching for a film that perfectly demonstrates the complexity and the wonder of the male psyche? I am of the opinion that with this film my search came to an end. Mike nichols, best known for the brilliant film "the graduate" performs his duty as director with the same craft and spendour in "Carnal Knowledge". A young Jack Nicholson wonderfully plays a character that we all find ourselves becoming at one point or another, he reminds us all of the raw animalism that exists in all men. This is surely a performance that would be a standout for most actors, but because of his undeniable brilliance, this is one of his lesser known roles. The surpise package in the film comes in Art Garfunkel, a man known for his musical skills, but maintains a strong screen presence and achieves a perfect charecterisation as the sweet but somewhat naive co-lead male role. The effect of the film is clearly demonstrated in the work of Woody Allen, and the philosophy which the film encorporates will stay with the most simple minded of audience.
