Amazon.co.uk Review
The eighth season of The X-Files will always be remembered as the year of brave decisions. David Duchovny's increasing dissatisfaction with the role meant he'd only appear in a few episodes. The solution? Enter Agent John Doggett (Robert Patrick) who basically stole the show within his first two minutes of screen time (and watch out for several Terminator 2 in-jokes too!). Scully switched roles to being the believer alongside Doggett's sceptic in a year that was more reliant on the background story arc than ever before. Her pregnancy remained at the foreground, while a more prominent Skinner joined in a hunt for the abducted Mulder that drew upon the black oil, cloning and bounty hunting aspects of the convoluted alien conspiracy story. A distinct lack of guest stars or writers indicated maturity beyond the need for ratings stunts: dedicated fans were pleased to see cameos from sinister Krycek, the reliable Lone Gunmen and the return of the show's very first abductee. The real strengths of the season came from new characters, including alternative female role model Special Agent Monica Reyes, and some terrific standalone episodes. Investigations covered a man going backward in time, deaths aboard an oilrig, a contagion in the Boston subway tunnels and creatures resembling bats and slugs. Agent Leyla Harrison (named after an X-Files fan who died of cancer) got to ask all the petty questions regular viewers want to know themselves. With Season 9 promised to be the last, this year was a remarkable achievement so late in a show's life.--Paul Tonks
x-files, best yet?

This box set is amazing, with Mulder not appearing in many of the episodes due to various reasons, agent John Dogget is introduced...You know the guy who played the bad guy in terminator 2 (I thought I realised him from somewhere). Anyway Scully and Dogget spend most of the box set searching for Mulder, including some outstanding stand alone episodes, such as "without" and "roadrunners", and when the fourth video (of five) begins you will find it hard to stop watching, episodes such as "this is not happening", "deadalive" and "three words". The way in which you start to find out information about alien life and about Mulder and other abductees is fantastic. To be honest I have no bad points about this box set...
The X Files - Season 8 [VHS] Reviews
The Beginning of the END...
Review date: 2003-01-12 Rating: 2 out of 10
Despite the success of The X-Files after 7 years, Chris Carter blew all his chances of a movie franchise away by not ending at season 7.
Season 8 although to the naked eye looks like the 'old school X-Files', in essence it is a wolf dressed in a sheep skin. Stories which doesn't make sense e.g. Surekill, Salvage or Badlaa, characters (Mulder & Scully) which once had so much in them are now changed into brainless zombies, and the lack of continuity just shows the might of The X-Files has dwindled to mere a shadow of it's former self.
If you don't mind how The X-Files is and don't care what you watch then Season 8 is for you, but if you want true classics then my advice is go for Seasons 1-7, the stories back then were better written.
Not for the faint hearted, as this season is the beginning of the end for the show with the introcuction of new primary characters in such a late season, the show is about to fall as the original cast is degraded into mere secondary characters.
Watch with caution, but as for me stay WELL AWAY!!
How low can you go....

In my opinion, this is the worst season to be issued as a Box Set to date. The character-assasination of Scully has become a blatant fact in this season: Scully is no longer the strong agent that we got to know from the first couple of seasons, instead she's a ditz who's crying the whole time. She might look like Scully, she might have the same voice as Scully, but it sure as hell ain't Scully!
And what to say about the 'new characters'...cardboard characters would be a better word to describe them...these characters are bland, and lack any sort of attraction you got from watching Mulder or Scully the first time, the second the third,... the 1000th time.
Robert Patrick and Annabeth Gish, have *no* chemistry on-screen, another letdown when compared to the combination David Duchovny/Gillian Anderson.
In addition to all of this, David Duchovny's presence may have been minimal, but at least the script-writers could have used him better when he *was* around, instead we get appearance that are totally redundant in most of the episodes that he is in...same thing for Gillian Anderson, half of the time, she was just there to colour up the episode.
Season 8: an utter a waste of TV! I give this zero stars!
A brilliant season with the help of new cast members.

The X-files is at its best in this new season. Not only do we have the energy burst of new and exciting characters but also the interwoven mystery surrounding Scully's pregnancy. The brilliance of Carter's writing is fully operational in these episodes, a reminder of what the x-files was in the early years.
Simple - The Best Season of the Show
Review date: 2002-05-03 Rating: 10 out of 10
Ignore any negative comments on this box set. This is simply the best season the show has ever produced. The mytharc is entirely action packed, with the search for Mulder, the return of Mulder, the birth of Scullys baby, and some fantastic stand alones along the way, its a season not to be missed. Especially for Scully fans. Robert Patrick is also fantastic as agent Doggett. You just have to see this season for yourself.
