Neither Chamberlain nor the British surrendered
Review date: 2010-08-08 Rating: 2 out of 10
I haven't read much of W L Shirer book and after reading in the introduction his claim that Chamberlain surrendered to the Germans at Munich I don't think I can.
Neither Chamberlain nor the British surrendered! It was Britain that declared war on the Nazi thugs for invading Poland while the Americans stood by while pretending not to see the evil that was unfolding so as not to disturb their consciences (if they had any) and only entered the fight against the Germans when Germany declared war on them December 11th 1941.
As for an American whose country was quite willing to stand by and watch Europe to be threatened and invaded by the Nazis to say we Brits surrendered is slanderous. He should rememember that the Americans only entered WW2 when they realised that they were being threaten too. More than a year after we asked for their help.
I notice that the majority (21 out of 31) of the revues made on this book are by anonymous persons calling themselves A. Customer. Well I think I wouldn't want people to know who I was if I were to praise such cr@p!
W L Shirer (not the way I am pleased to spell his name) should take up writing scripts for Hollywood.

a first class book about the history of the third reich.well worth buying and a very good read
The ultimate chronicle of the Third Reich!
Review date: 2009-04-07 Rating: 10 out of 10
I owe a lot to this book. If my passion for political history started anywhere it started with Shirer. I was only 14 when I first read it and though I have read an entire phalanx of books on Hitlerite Germany over the last 15 years, none have been as detailed, colourful, interesting and factual as this one. The political, social, and military events of the Third Reich are superbly described (Shirer was a witness to many of the events as he was in Germany at the time)and leave the reader hungry for more. The book also provides a detailed biograpical account of Hitler and provides a good description of the political lives of the Nazi elite. (Goering, Ribbentrop, Himmler etc)
Quite simply a masterpiece!
massive massive classic read
