For just as it did with its updating of Robin Hood for Saturday nights, the legend of Merlin has undergone something of an overhaul here, and sticklers for authenticity will have plenty to pick at. The occasional narrative bumps don’t help, either, and the special effects clearly leave it thirsting for a Doctor Who-like budget. And yet, warts and all, Merlin really is quite good fun. The BBC has wisely wheeled in some experienced thesps to work alongside the likes of Colin Morgan in the title role, with Richard Wilson and Anthony Head happy to join in the fun. Don’t knock the aforementioned Morgan, though: he carries the show well on his young shoulders, and has a blossoming career ahead of him. This DVD pack contains the first six episodes of Merlin, and they gradually introduce us to the land of Camelot, and the mysterious characters that lie within. They also offer a solid amount of rounded family entertainment, that sets the scene for an intriguing second half of the series. What’s more, there’s just enough here to suggest that young Merlin may have further adventures even beyond then. --Jon Foster

Amazon.co.uk Review
The latest classic tale to be dragged up to date by the BBC, the decision to revive Merlin as primetime entertainment was just about rewarded, even if it does manage to ride roughshod over history in the process.

Well worth buying. After getting off to a shaky start (the first episode is very dodgy in places) it continued to improve every week. Glad I stuck with it as every episode is a thrill to watch.

Keep the Magic Secret... (Merlin DVD review volume 1)
Review date: 2008-12-28 Rating: 10 out of 10
Yet another BBC Drama on Saturdays, some people might call it a copy of Doctor Who, but I disagree, Merlin bears no resembalance to that even better show, but Merlin is a great show, now I believe this disc features the first 5 episodes of Merlin series One (yes theres going to be another one!), which are all great episodes. Like Doctor Who is a science fction drama, Merlin is a fanatsy drama, well theres nothign wrong with that, in fact, a fantasy drama is just what the BBC needed, now we have sci fi, fantasy, soap, drama, post-apocalyptic and much more, hmm perhaps a new BBC related but no no People say all them shows are related but no, Merlin is an, well now that I think of its its not original, iots based on the tales of Arthur, Excalibur and Merlin, and this is innacurate, but a great version, Merlin is more young and heroic in the face of danger, Arthur seems a lot more of a funny character, and the whole story is different, in this one there isnt even a stone to pull the sword out of!
So the characters to start with are great, Merlin is a sort of new person in the village, hes reckless! But a caring character, and sometimes a bit dramatic, for example "without magic, I might as well die"... Arthur is a more brave character who cares for his honour and then theres Guy, the medicine maker, Gweneviere the servant girl, the mysterious witch, Nimeuh the sorcerer who intends to return magic to the land of Camelot, the enchanted dragon, and Gwenivieres friend and boss, The Lady Morgana and her friend, King Utha of Camelot. So this BBC series is a great series, good ideas involved, sorcerers are trying tp return magic to Camelot, Merlin must furfill his destiny to make Camelot a great kingdom with Arthur as king and mystical monsters to battle...
Episode 1 is a great episode, we see Merlin enter the kingdom of Calemot, to stay with Guy, where the series opens with an excetution of a sorcerer, and a witch swears her revenge...meanwhile Merlin meets Guy who is saved by Merlin, with the power to slow down time, Guy promised to keep his secret, then Merlin has social toruble when he meets Arthur, and ends up having tomatos thrown at him as punishment! Later in the story Merlin discovers the dragon and a great secret...then he must defeat a witch...5/5
Episode 2
This episode tells of a man with a powerful magical shield, fighting the men of Camelot in a tournament, and Merlin is Athurs mansevrvant...5/5
Episode 3
A curse, a plague is spread upon Camelot, The Mark of Nimeuh, and its up to Merlin to stop it...4/5
Episode 4
When 2 kingdoms combine, a chalice is poisoned, Merlin is about to die, Athur must find a cure, and go on a journey...
Episode 5
A man comes to Camelot hoping to be a knight, fakes his identidy as a noble, and a griffin attacks Camelot in "Lancelot"...
Overall a great series of 5 episodes, the theres still the next 8, ring on Volume 2...

It's amazing! Every saturday night me and my family would sit down and watch merlin! And now we can just flick it on the dvd whenever we like! Merlin is an awesome series and although the line "I don't believe it" is missing during the rest of the episodes it'll still be a memorable programme! Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Angel Coulby, Katie McGrath, Richard Wilson and Anthony Head have outdone themselves!
its magicly good

I like this almost as much as the 8o's Robin Hood series with Jason Connery and Michael Praed. It is mystical and magical. For some reason the writers have decided to mix up all the legendary characters. Guinivere is a black serving girl and Morgana is a goodie! Exactly why the writers decided to do this I do not know-but the stories are still good and the special effects top rate. The acting and photography are brilliant!
