Amazon.co.uk Review
The delirious sight of Meryl Streep leading a river of multigenerational women singing "Dancing Queen" is one of the high points of Mamma Mia!, the musical built around the songs of the hugely popular pop group ABBA. The plot sets in motion when Sophie (Amanda Seyfried, Mean Girls), daughter of Donna (Streep), sends a letter to three men, inviting them to her wedding--because after reading her mother's diary, she suspects that one of them is her father. When all three arrive at the Greek island where Donna runs a hotel, Donna flips out and finds that passions she thought she'd laid aside are coming back to life. But let's face it, the plot is not the point--it's a ridiculous contrivance that provides an excuse for the characters to sing the massive hits of ABBA. Regrettably, first-time film director Phyllida Lloyd (who directed the original stage production) has drawn over-the-top performances from everyone involved, even Streep; every production number hammers its exuberance into your eyeballs. Which is too bad, because Mamma Mia! is a rarity: A middle-aged love story. The kids start things off, but the story is really about Streep and the three guys (former James Bond Pierce Brosnan, former Mr. Darcy Colin Firth, and Swedish star Stellan Skarsgard), as well as Donna's best friends (Christine Baranski, best known from the TV show Cybill, and Julie Walters, Calendar Girls). It's a romantic comedy aimed at the people who were around when all these songs were new, and that's an age group Hollywood largely ignores. For that alone, Mamma Mia! deserves to find an audience. --Bret Fetzer
Mama Mia!..here I go...
Review date: 2008-12-29 Rating: 2 out of 10
Borrowed a DVD version to watch, based mainly on the wonderful feel good factor hype that abounds over this movie, and, well, the wife and I had to switch it off after 15 minutes. Just couldn't face any more. Meryl Streep singing and being overly bubbly and effervescent and happy and jumpy and running aroundy...just doesn't suite her acting abilities and other than the obvious Greek Island bits, the whole thing was shot in a studio. Julie Walters, I guess she hadn't worked for a while so she jumped at the chance of, err, starring, um, singing in a West End musical remake. What is going on...why did these 'named' actors sign up for it...nightmare...and the daughter singing mum's ABBA worded diary contents out aloud...nah...
If you want gushy, wet Sunday afternoony watching paint dry entertainment and never want to seriously listen to an ABBA song again, then buy the BD/DVD, although from previous reviewers, the DVD would seem to be the better deal.
Sorry. Mama Mia! You're rubbish.

Very disapointed. Pay twice as much for the blue Ray version and dont get the sing along version as the standard DVD. Let down.......

Like many husbands I got dragged to the cinema to see this but I have to say I loved it so much so that we both went back to see it again. Needless to say when it came out on DVD I was first in the queue and my better half said it was the best Christmas present she's had for ages!
As others have said it's simply a feel good film and whats wrong with that?

I bought this for my good lady at Christas - we have ust watched it & it won't play in Dolby Digital 5.1 .
This seems bizarre for such a movie where sound is so important!
I spent a good half of the film annoying everybody by playing around with the settings!
Is this an error or have I missed something??
