PLOT SUMMARY: The BBC's 1980 production of Jane Austen's "Pride And Prejudice" adapted by Fay Weldon and starring David Rintoul as Mr D'Arcy and Elizabeth Garvie as Elizabeth Bennet. The two discs feature the complete series originally transmitted in 1980 in five episodes.
ABOUT THE DVD: This is a 2 DVD release by JUST ENTERTAINMENT for the NETHERLANDS market (Region 2 PAL format, which is the same as in the UK, so it will play without problems on all standard DVD players in the UK and the rest of Europe). The text on the rear of the packaging is in Dutch and the only subtitles on the discs are Dutch language (which can be switched off, but there are no English subtitles on the DVDs). The AUDIO is the original ENGLISH (Dolby Digital 2.0). The feature is presented in COLOUR and in FULL SCREEN format (4:3 ratio).
Austenesque irony

For me too, this production surpasses its more famous (and even sometimes over-hyped) successor.
With a sparkling screenplay by Fay Weldon, amongst its greatest strengths and there are many, are the wonderful characterizations. Elizabeth Garvie is a very pretty Miss Elizabeth Bennet indeed and delivers her witty lines with true Austenesque irony. Malcolm Rennie gives a delightful comic performance as Mr Collins and Priscilla Morgan captures the silliness of Mrs Bennet, played with far better measure than in the 1995 version, and are outstanding in an inspired cast.
I can imagine this 1980 production may appear slow of pace to some but I think its leisurely narrative captures far better the spirit of the original novel.
It remains, for me, the definitive screen version. If you love Austen and have seen only the 1995 BBC version, may I suggest you see give this one a try?

I agree that the BBC's 1995 version is very good but this older version will always have that little bit something extra for me. Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul are excellent as Elizabeth and Darcy and supported by a good cast. I definatly would recommend seeing this every time!

though outdone by the highly rated Ehle/Firth production I still love this one - even having just re-read the book. Both versions have something to give in script and acting.
