Amazon.co.uk Review

Backed by Guillermo del Toro and yet made by a surprisingly inexperienced group of film makers (especially considering the end result), The Orphanage is a chilling, tense supernatural thriller that could certainly teach more established directors a thing or two about how to send shivers down the spine.

It tells the story of a woman, Laura, returning to the orphanage where she was raised as a child. Her plans are to look after sick children there, but it doesn’t take long for things to go awry. Without giving too much away, visions from her past and a threat to her own family are the starting points for a complex and quite haunting thriller, that stays in the mind long after the credits have rolled.

A film that works on more than one level, The Orphanage really is some piece of work. Juan Antonia Bayona, behind the camera, generates an incredibly atmospheric mood that underpins the film, and wisely takes time to put pieces in place. He’s aided by a terrific cast, and an unsettling screenplay that layers in an uneasy horror that’s as anti-Hollywood as it comes.

The result of all of this is one of the scariest films of recent times, and yet something that still manages to be that little bit more, that sticks in your mind for some time afterwards. Make no mistake, The Orphanage really is something different, and all the better for it. --Jon Foster

Is it me?

My first ever review, so bear with me. I've just watched this, having purely bought this based on the previous reviews. I love a good horror film, unfortunately this isn't one. Honestly i've been more scared watching football, being a Coventry City fan, a lot!!!! Where can i start?? Anyone want to buy a cheap Blu-Ray, only watched once. I can't fault the quality of the disk and the actors do a very good job, considering the material they have to work with, it just isn't scary! It takes an hour to get going, then just when you think ...here we go...it peters out to a somewhat lame ending. People were comparing it to the Others, buy that instead, a far better film. To me horror films should scare the pants off me, a rare beast today i'm afraid and this doesn't.

Good, but not that good.

I don't know whether simply adding the name Guillermo Del Toro to a movie adds stars or not, but this is nothing special. If it were in English, it'd star Naomi Watt and be pretty forgetable. I watched this movie as I do most - open and without expectations, yet the film lacked teeth, failed to generate any real or lasting interest in the characters involved and seemed overly interested in itself - it was too self-aware.

Seriously Amazing Film

It's not often i write a review but after watching this movie i HAVE to. And for those out there who are put off a little by the subtitles, please don't be. Due to the pacing and feel of the film it really draws you in and after about 10 minutes you totally forget it's in spanish, One of the best movies ive seen in years never mind the best "scary" film. recommended to anyone!!

Very good indeed

This film was well received by the critics on it's relatively recent release. It exceeded my expectations. It does have the supernatural feel of The Others, another film I thought was underrated.Basically it's about a couple who "lose" their son, and the subsequent events that occur in the old orphanage in which they live and plan to open a childrens home. There is a great story and enough surprises along the way to keep it ticking at a fair pace, it's also quite melancholy. I don't want to give away the story but the device of the treasure hunt which is used twice is quite brilliant. It does have a great resolution or ending but I recommend you watch it to find out what it is. It is a more than worthy follow up to Pans Labyrinth and I think that says it all.Incidentally if you haven't seen Pans Labyrinth then try films both you will not be disappointed by either of them.

Creepy !

I don't normally watch subtitled films but I have to say this was very good. It was very creepy in parts and the twist at the end was unexpected and pretty horrifying!! There was some great jumpy moments in it and overall enjoyed watching it!
