Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends - Complete Season One (Marvel Originals Series - 80s) [1981]
ReviewsRejoice Spider-Fans ! Review date: 2008-09-20 Rating: 10 out of 10 The day is almost upon us, it's great to see this classic cartoon finally hit DVD. Like many of you, I grew up on this show in the early Eighties. Looking back on it now, it's still fun but not as good as the solo Spider-Man show of 1981. For me, the 1981 series is the definitive Spidey show. Let's hope good sales of this series promote a release of the aforementioned. By comparison to the more comic faithful 1981 series, this show is pretty stupid,- Spidey, Firestar and Ice Man all live at the Parker residence while attending ESU, and have a room that transforms into a high tech superhero base. wtf? All the same, it's great fun. I just can't stand that stupid dog of aunt May's- Ms Lion. Here's an interesting item I found on wikipedia regarding the 1981 show- Due to network constraints and demands from parents, characters such as Spider-Man were not allowed to make a fist to strike an opponent, but the show's creators managed to conceal these issues with a focus on action and relatively fluid animation. I assume this is the same for Amazing Friends, not that I noticed as a kid. Anyway, if you're reading this you're probably going to buy, so what are ya waiting for? Go buy it! Finally, Spidey and His Amazing Friends on DVD Review date: 2008-08-05 Rating: 10 out of 10 This is LONG overdue. Looking forward to the complete series release in October. Hopefully this will lead to the release of Spidey's Solo Series that aired from 1981-1982. It would be great if they released these also: 1) Bubble, Bubble, Oil And Trouble (1981) featuring Spider-Man/Peter Parker, J. Jonah Jameson, Aunt May, Doctor Octopus. 2) Doctor Doom... " dina na naaaa, dina na na na na-naaaah... (da doo doo do do-dooo!) Review date: 2008-07-07 Rating: 10 out of 10 This cartoon along with Jayce & The Wheeled Warriors & Battle of the Planets (or G-Force, Gadgaman for the hardened) were my favourite childhood cartoons. Why was Spiderman & His Amazing Friends so incredible? Hmmmmm? The animation was very good for this time (& to me, still good crisp animation today), Peter Parker/Spiderman says some very quick back-atcha lines to the villians. I feel that Iceman/Bobby Drake & Firestar/Angelica Jones helped make this such a special cartoon too. There were 2 episodes i think involving the X-Men too, which was very exciting at the time, when there was more to the X-men than just Wolverine and when Wolverine knew his place! "Hiya dude.... Wanna peace a fruit?" (as Wolverine spikes some fruit to impress Firestar) Smooth, Wolverine, smooth! (Firestar & Iceman were both mutants from the X-Men) There are lots of super villains in this too... Beetle, Lizard, Dr Octopus, Arachnoid, Dr Doom, Kraven, Green Goblin, Electro, Magneto, Juggernaut, Kingpin, Dracula, Shocker, apperances by Captain America & S.h.i.e.l.d. This cartoon was obviously before the american spoken language evolved or devolved(!) into "its like.. like hello?.... like awesome... enough already... talk to the hand.... girlfriend?..... sister?......." and Peter Parker looks like.... well, Peter Parker in this cartoon too. This cartoon was not ruined by too many spiderman spawns, such as Venom, Carnage and the annoying Madam Web, which ruined the 90s series for me. There is no experimental CGI animation in this too which is great. Each episode is introduced by "Hi Spidey fans, this is Stan Lee....." and the all important opening theme too, not forgetting the funny 70s tune that always played in concerts, balls, shopping malls appears in many episodes. Even my mom & sister will forever remember "You're a Jinx Angelica........ Miss Angelica Ji-inx, Miss Angelica Ji-inx" and the nightmares Peter has when Sandman think he's discovered Spiderman's real identity... "Peter Parker.... Peter Parker... Peter Parkeeeer"..... There's Flash Thompson - "Hey Parker.... heres sand in your eye.." Flash is such a knob. And there's the new hero on the block, erm... "Videoman!" True marvel animation heaven. SPIDER-FRIENDS, GO FOR IT!!! Review date: 2008-05-10 Rating: 10 out of 10 YEEEEEAAAAAHHHH!!!!! It's the BEST Spidey Toon ever! AND it's from the 80's! man, I can't wait for this, just hope that all the episodes are released (complete with the Stan Lee Narrations)and that there are some decent extras...
