To be honest, I found this film rather dull. The characters are completely one-dimensional and the story is pretty uninteresting and heavily reminiscent of Night of the Living Dead, Assault on Precinct 13, Dawn of the Dead, etc.. In fact, I'm only giving it 3 points because I love vampires and vampire movies so much. The problem with disposable characters is that you just don't care whether or not they live or die, thus there's no tension when they go an do something really moronic that puts them in imminent danger (there's a fair bit of that in this film). I didn't like the ending much: it seemed a bit of a cop-out, but I won't spoil it for you.

I like to end a review on a positive note if possible, and this film has some really good camerwork, some nice gory special effects and the first 30 minutes of the movie builds the tension really well.

Reviews

3.5 stars. OK film, good Blu Ray
Review date: 2008-06-18 Rating: 8 out of 10

This film has an interesting plot and quite decently freakish vampires. However it is let down by having seemingly suicidal 'survivors' and by not having any outstanding action set pieces.

The leader of the vampires is done very well. With a chilling soulless menace but also with a sort of injured dignity that humans should have dared to force them into the shadows.

The rest of the vampires are pretty freakish and quite effective at gving you the chills.

The human survivors are a pretty good depiction of a random bunch of people, but frankly half of them seem to have a deathwish, doing the most idiotic things that you really don't care if they do die.

The action scenes throughout are either completely cliched or just a bit unimpressive. There was only one bit I really started grinning, you'll know it when you see it, it involved a chainsaw on a JCB.

Overall, the film is alright, the acting is ok, the lead actors are pretty good to be fair. It could have been a bit more exciting than it was though. Not much really happened in it.

As for the blu-ray. Very good. The HD picture was superb, and certain scenes really are impressive. One scene of a guy holding an axe standing in a snow filled playground, with the headless body of a vampire stuck upright in the chains of a swing, blood spattered around the corpse, was pretty amazing and is stuck in my mind.

The sound also excellent. 5.1 or HD-DTS. The HD-DTS was very good and noticeably better than the 5.1, but be aware the film is generally quite quiet, being more of a suspense film rather than action.

30 DAYS OF BLU RAY
Review date: 2008-05-23 Rating: 10 out of 10

30 DAYS OF NIGHT

- This film is a tremendous adaptation of the original graphic novel.
- Basically Barrow in North America is entering its dark month. 30 days of the year in deepest winter when the sun does not rise and shine in the area.
- A group of vampires arrive in the town to take advantage of the darkness and the rest is a bloody battle for survival of the town's folk.
- Following closely the graphic novel the films vampires are creepy, bloodthirsty monsters.
- The film recreates the atmosphere of the graphic novel superbly and for me the story is enhanced by the jumpy action and the folky characters.
- There is plenty here to satisfy horror and gore fans.
- The Blu ray transfer is very good and the sense of snowy isolation of the town comes through mightily.
- The film is a major triumph and has both substance and style, imagination and action.

run of the mill
Review date: 2008-05-02 Rating: 6 out of 10

i saw this at the cinema a few months back, a decent film so i added it to my collection. the setting is creepy and works well, but hartnett is too young to play the towns sherrif role... although his acting is sound. the little love/break up sub story is weak and blatantly put in to try and beef up a pretty run of the mill horror fair. plenty of gore and action keep the film moving and it's paced fairly well. if you like horrors then it warrants a watch.

ps. WHY do they make most blu rays anamorphic widescreen. ie, two big black bars at the top/bottom of your telly. titles which don't use this (rocky balboa/night at the museum) look far superior.
