Mr. Brooks [2007]
ReviewsWhatever happened to Kevin Costner?! Review date: 2008-10-10 Rating: 6 out of 10 I was inches from giving up on this film around an hour into it but am glad I stuck it all the way through. Mr. Brooks is a bog standard serial killer movie which has as its twist ... lots of twists! There are a couple early on which are pretty obvious and then after about an hour you get two or three more in quick succession and like a click of a switch the film instantly becomes interesting. Things are then wound up nicely with a satisfying ending and you come away feeling you've been entertained. I couldn't help thinking that Alfred Hitchcock would have done it so much better but the performances are compentent, the story is good and the script ok. It won't win any Oscars but it will give you a good evening's entertainment and send you to bed happy. What more could you want you greedy people?! A good thriller Review date: 2008-09-07 Rating: 6 out of 10 Mr Brooks is a slow burning thriller. Kevin Costner plays the protagonist who is a well respected businessman, husband and father with a secret addiction to killing and William Hurt plays the `voice in his head'. A good film with some great acting from Dane Cook an actor I've never even heard of before, for me his portrayal of the wannabe killer keen to learn from the expert made the film. As for Demi Moore's character!! OMG she is dreadful and I actually went off the film because her character was so typical and made me cringe, she is the stereotypical hardnosed female cop....expect lots of gum chewing and sentences with mother*cker in them. I can't describe how bad she is....there was no need to include her in a film that is trying to be dark and disturbing. Also the daughter story was a bit far fetched and again in my opinion didn't need to be included in the film. Overall Mr Brooks kept my attention and the premise is good but I wouldn't say it was the best film I'd ever seen. A good film...not fantastic. Underneath the calm exterior lies..... Review date: 2008-08-28 Rating: 10 out of 10 You may think "not another serial killer story" ,but this has a unique take on the topic.First,an inspired piece of casting puts Costner into the best role of his acting career.Second, the use of William Hurst as Costner's conscience, who voices throughout the movie what is in costner's head, and who is visible only to us the audience is a bit of pure genius.Third,Costner has a life as a very normal-seeming married, successful, local businessman.Immensely calm, poised, thoughtful,he is in no way a crazy.Yet he has been killing people and getting away with it for years. He is addicted to it.The film unfolds around this base into several directions-his daughter who quits school under a cloud;a guy who sees Costner at a crucial moment and wants to join Costner on his next kill;a pursuing cop(the only weak part of the casting as some idiot gave the part to Demi Moore). The pace and tension are wracked up relentlessly as the story unfolds. Glad I saw it Review date: 2008-06-15 Rating: 8 out of 10 Mr Books is a film about a sucessful typical family man on the outside with a secret life not even his family knows about. I havent seen a film with Kevin Costner for some time and im really glad I got it. Someone on another website said Kevin Costner was like a block of wood in this film, Well Mr Brooks is no maniac he knows what hes doing and is very very good at it, a calculating indidividual trying to satisfy a dark need he has. Hes no raging lunatic. Interistinglly the film becomes about how he wants to change his secret dark side. How many films do you know that a character tries to reform himself out of his own desire to be better not becauase of anything else. Some may find the film too disturbing how ruthless Brooks can behave. The film is well thought out and Apparently Costner loved the script. The film was made independently which you can learn from the decent extras on the dvd of which there is also a commentary. Who knows how it wouldve been if it wasnt independent, this is probably why it has enjoyable scenes. A very good film for Costner to return to the screen in. Its hard to see the outocme of the ivestigator on his trail and I found the ending apppropriate for how clever the character Brooks is. Worth renting before you buy but good one to have in a ocllection Product Details/SpecificationsActor(s): William Hurt Kevin Costner Demi Moore Dane Cook Ruben Santiago-Hudson Creators: Kevin Costner (Primary Contributor) Demi Moore (Primary Contributor) Director(s): Recording label: MGM Entertainment Manufacturer: MGM Entertainment EAN: 5039036036580 Binding: DVD Number of items: 1 Format: PAL, Release date: 2008-03-10 Audience rating: Suitable for 18 years and over Region code: 2 Running time: 116 minutes
