Movies based on computer games generally aren't well respected, but just because they aren't high art doesn't mean they can't be highly enjoyable. The only catch is that you need to be a fan of computer games to appreciate them. Resident Evil: Extinction is the third movie in the massively popular Resident Evil franchise, and it's probably the best one yet.

Between Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Extinction, the zombie-creating T-virus has spread far beyond the doomed Raccoon City; now the human race is almost extinct (hence the title). When a convoy of survivors meets up with the genetically-altered Alice, the shadowy Umbrella Corporation does everything in its power to take them down and reclaim her; but Alice isn't giving up without a fight...

Resident Evil: Extinction is part zombie movie, and part post-apocalyptic survival yarn. The big set pieces use CGI that doesn't look anything like reality, but does look very much like a computer game, which is possibly intentional--since this is a sequel to an adaptation, Resident Evil: Extinction does tend to assume a built-in audience which is already familiar with the various quirks of the franchise. If you're a fan of the games, you'll enjoy the various references to game characters and events; if not, you might feel a bit left out. It's not the best entry point to the franchise if you're a complete newcomer, but if you've seen the other films, it's a hell of a lot of fun. -- Sarah Dobbs

Reviews

great picture poor sound
Review date: 2008-07-17 Rating: 6 out of 10

well i really like this movie but the blu-ray disc comes as a bit of a disapointment, the picture is very good but the truehd soundtrack has problems, basically it's nearly impossible to hear whar people are saying due to the fact that the dialogue is recorded at such a low volume in comparison to the rest of the audio.

Great Blu-ray quality, Good enjoyable film...

I wasn't really expecting much from this film but i ended up really enjoying it, maybe its becuse i have only recently got a Blu-ray player and this film really looked good in HD but whatever the reason i liked it.

The picture quality is amazing and the desert sands really look good.

my only problem with the film was that it ended way to fast, it needed atleast another 15minutes added to make the conclusion of the film feel worthwhile. but aside from tha i was very impressed.

id defiantly buy it if you want to show off the quality of the blu-rays HD.

3.5 stars. Fun film, very good bluray.

I rented this film, and I really was not expecting much, given how negative some of the reviews for the film are.

Because I was not expecting much I enjoyed the film and am glad I rented it.

The plot is not particularly intricate but it DOES make sense, and the fact that there actually is a logical plot leads me to question some of the negative reviews I have seen.

What does one expect from this film, based on a zombie shoot-em-up game? Gore, violence, plenty of action and a fast moving simple plot. And that is what you get.

I enjoyed it. I thought the action scenes were well done, I understood the plot (which did not end as I had expected).

The bluray quality is excellent. The visuals are exceptionally good throughout in my opinion, one of the best HD films I have seen so far. And the sound, in true HD, is very good, very atmospheric and surround sound fabulous. I truly did jump out of my seat a couple of times.

Do not expect a masterpiece, do expect a solidly made, fairly exciting zombie killing spree, with good production values, great sound and brilliant HD. There are plenty of extras, though I found the actual menu navigation quite cumbersome. Well worth renting. I gave out 4 stars as 3 is a probably a bit harsh.

Dubious audio !!!!!!!!
Review date: 2008-05-27 Rating: 2 out of 10

Don't know what caused this, but I have a Sony AR61M laptop with a combo blu-ray player and the audio kept coming and going. Sometimes extremely loud, other times silence. Ruined the whole experience.
It's not the drive as I have played several other blu-ray discs without any problems, so I assume that it was the audio transfer onto the blu-ray disc during creation, as the sound kept changing at scene changes. It means I'll always rent before I buy to try and make sure that I don't get a duff recording.
Ah, new technology, ain't it just great.
