Amazon.co.uk Review

From a visual standpoint, this CG feature starring the venerable '80s and '90s superheroes the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is nothing short of slam-bang; the computer animation has a scope and look that transcends both the original comics and animated series and the three live-action features that preceded it. Writer/director Kevin Munroe creates a striking animated world for the four heroes in a half-shell to live, play, and fight in, and the action sequences are occasionally breathtaking in their speed and complexity. But where TMNT stumbles is its bland plot, which picks up after the last of the live-action features with all four teen turtles in disarray, and abandons longtime villain Shredder in favor of an industrialist (well voiced by Patrick Stewart) who recruits the Foot Clan (including Karai, played by Zhang Ziyi) to revive thirteen ancient monsters to aid in his world domination scheme. It's a simple and fun story for kids, but longtime Turtles fans will miss the wry humour and smart sense of irony of the original comics (created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who gets an executive producer credit here) in this storyline. Still, for most adolescent audience members, such concerns won't matter a whit in the face of the abundant action. --Paul Gaita

Not as incredible as the Incredibles but getting there!
Review date: 2008-04-07 Rating: 8 out of 10

I think this is probably the best representation of the TMNT on the big or small screens. It's certainly the closest to the comics.

A warrior from Central America gained immortality 3,000 years ago, and his generals were turned to stone. 13 monsters were released into the world and created carnage. Fast forward to now, and the portal from which the warrior gained his immortality is going to open again and he's gathering the monsters. Meanwhile the Turtles have grown up a little. Leo is in Central America to learn how to be a good leader, Mikey's got an entertainment business, Donatello works in IT support and Raph is, well, Raph. Meanwhile April and Casey have an antiques business and the Foot Clan, sans Shredder, is selling their services to the highest bidder.

The design on the film is great. The animation clearly takes a cue from Incredibles and this works for it as you don't spend your time worrying about how the CGI figures don't look like real people. It is stylised and fun. The story is rather interesting, mixing themes of brotherhood with the big plot about the monsters and the immortal. It's fun and dramatic, with a great fight between Raph and Leo.

It also seems to follow the previous films without being slavishly continuity bound. Shredder is dead, and rather than rehash another resurrection, they wisely leave him out to let the characters grow a little.

And the action! It simply couldn't be achieved by actors in spongy suits. It's as kinetic as anime and very well coreographed.

It's not Citizen Kane, but I doubt anyone who is reading these reviews is expecting that. But I think it represents a more mature approach to the franchise that takes it slightly higher than just another opportunity to sell toys.

Thumbs up!

Good Fun, Kids love it.

Anyone who gives this film a bad score has something wrong with them. It's great fun. The turtles have joined the 21st century in style. Of course it's a bit daft - it's the turtles! My 3 yr old son is mad about them and loves this film.
The humour appeals to adults and the graphics are fun. The plot is easy and that's all I want from a £5 DVD.

Take it steady and make it "ninja time!" every day :)

Great except from one thing......

This is a good movie to contnue the TMNT movie saga. The CGI is fantastic, especially the Raph VS Leo scene. The plot is a little bit shakey, but the worst part of this movie is the SERIOUS lack of Shredder.Ok he is mentioned at the start and end of the movie, but to make this movie a BIG hit, I think Shredder should have been in it. I know that they want to have him in the next one (thats if there is a next one), but here's hoping!

Great Comeback

Feeling a little bored the other night, I watched this on-demand. While really not expecting much I couldn't resist seeing what has become of my beloved Turtles, and you know what? I loved it! It is very much made for children and not the children of yesteryear who grew up with the half-shelled foursome, consequently it is a rather haphazard mish mash that makes little to no sense plot-wise but it manages to retain all the glorious insanity that made me love the franchise as a kid. Although definitely for the pre-teens, it is not without some adult references. More than one baddie actually dies and there are some jokes which might fly a bit over the heads of some younger viewers. The setpieces are dark, dirty, urban affairs and the turmoil within the group works well to bring the characters into a new era. I will admit, I was gutted that Shredder wasn't involved, but the foot clan look brilliant and if there's going to be a sequel it seems everyone favourite ninja/samurai/all round badass will make his welcome return. Try not to get to hung up on the fact that this is kids movie and not a movie made for older fans, there's still a lot of life in these guys left. It's worth mentioning the actual cg as well, although not as impressive as say, Shrek, it is a very shiney effort with what I assume was not a big budget. At times it does look like a high end 360 game rather than a film but they've worked with the style to make a rather pretty finished product. Roll on the sequel!

Amazing Looking CGI Film
Review date: 2008-02-25 Rating: 10 out of 10

On DVD this looked great, on Blu Ray it looks amazing. If you want to show off a CGI movie on your HDTV to impress people, you can't go wrong with this. The animation was always impressive but with Blu Ray you can now see just how much work went into each scene, one of the highlights being the rooftop fight in the rain between Leonardo and Raphael, you can see every drop that lands on them! As for the movie, well it's under rated, it's got great characters, a great story and excellet action set pieces. It really shows up a lot of the Pixar copy-cat movies that always seem to show up after Disney have a smash hit. I would rate this up there with classics such as Toy Story and The Incredibles. Cowabunga!
