Merry Christmas
Review date: 2008-11-23 Rating: 8 out of 10

The quality of the recordings, particularly of the earliest shows, is limited by the archival nature of the original material but it is not bad.

The humour of Morecambe and Wise tends to 'date' somewhat with time, but many of the sketches are so original and amusing that they have become 'classics'. It is easy to see why so many rich and famous entertainers were prepared to risk their reputations by appearing in the show.

Morecambe and Wise can be extremely funny without being in the least offensive. What a shame that witless oafs now manage to be extremely offensive in the name of comedy, sometimes without being the least bit funny. This collection provides genuine entertainment which will amuse entire families.

Review date: 2008-02-23 Rating: 10 out of 10

We all know we love Eric and Ern, but what you really want to know is what's on the bloomin' discs, right?

Here is Disc One of the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Specials which covers the 1969, 1970 and 1971 shows. I'll add discs Two and Three as soon as I watch them.

Monks feeding the ducks
Eric's giant X-Mas tree

The 1970 Show:

If it ever gets here I'm sure it'll be great
Review date: 2007-12-21 Rating: 10 out of 10

I'm giving this five stars because I have no doubt it will be great when it arrives. I watched every one of these 'live' the first time around, surrounded by my family, and am looking forward to reliving those memories, especially as sadly my family are no longer with us. But despite ordering on the 9th December, and paying for 1st Class delivery, and more infuriatingly, despite it saying a week ago that the order was being prepared and therefore couldn't be cancelled, according to the details in My Account, this has still not been despatched. I've been checking almost hourly for many days now, and the item has been in and out of stock like a yo-yo, but again, for about the third time, it's showing as In Stock so if it doesn't arrive in time for Christmas I shall be FURIOUS. Come on Amazon, get your act together and treat your loyal customers properly.

Best Comedy Ever?
Review date: 2007-11-30 Rating: 10 out of 10

3 DVD's covering 9 Xmas Specials. Worth the money just for the 1971 show which featured the classic sketches of Shirley Bassey and Andre Previn (or is it Preview?)

Christmas feast
Review date: 2007-11-30 Rating: 10 out of 10

Three-disc set comprising the eight Morecambe and Wise Christmas shows from 1969-1977 (there wasn't one in 1974).

As usual with the BBC, there are no extras or booklet but it is such a bumper package of goodies, you still get your money's worth.

Surprisingly, the first two shows here (starring Fenella Fielding, Edward Woodward and others) are identical to shows in the Series Two dvd, with the addition of the odd sketch and musical interlude.

The quality does vary from year to year but generally these are fun-packed, memorable productions with loads of illustrious stars and of course, Eric and Ernie's nervy, well-honed showmanship.

Highlights are Vanessa Redgrave as Josephine, the Robin Day brawl, Shirley Bassey in boots, Glenda Jackson as Queen Victoria, Jack Jones and backing singers, and their career-best sketch with Andre Previn and the Grieg Piano Concerto: a brilliantly conceived reworking of an old M&W routine, which has the feeling of improvisation yet the polish of true professionalism, and excellent timing by all the players, Previn a natural comedy straight man.
Merry Christmas!
