A Very Promising Urban Fantasy Series...
Review date: 2008-10-18 Rating: 8 out of 10

I rather liked this TV adaptation of Jim Butcher's Dresden File books. It's not as slick as predecessors of it's type, but it did have a certain amount of appeal and it did fill a Buffy and Angel shaped gap.

More hit than miss, the series has a lot of interesting episodes dealing with supernatural crime in the windy city of Chicago. Harry Dresden is quite a likable magic wielding PI with a dark past who teams up with grumpy but good-natured Detective Murray who basically suspects her somewhat eccentric freelance police adviser is much more than meets the eye. Of course Harry can't tell her magic and monsters exist and has to walk a dangerously thin line between both world's rules in order to protect her. Harry also has help from Bob, the ghost of a powerful sorcerer who was cursed to live in a skull for eternity because he did break the rules. Apparently there are people who enforce the magical law and maintain the balance, and none of them like Harry. My favourite re-curring characters are Ancient Mai, a sinister force of good and the femme fatal classy vampire club owner Bianca, who may or may not have Dresden's best interests at heart. Other than one episode dedicated to the vampire, they don't get much screen time, but they're a treat when they're on. I love Bob too, 'cause he's actually quite charming in his snippy sarky 'woe-is-me' way. It's also clear he cares a lot for his latest keeper and prodigy.

All in all, this series has a lot to offer. It's a bit disjointed sometimes and falls a little flat in some episodes when you were hoping for more impact, but it does have some crackin' moments. I also love the fact Harry's wand is a hockey stick! The Dresden Files is brilliant fun and definitely well worth watching.

A start, but no finish.

The Dresden Files makes a good start in Season One. Showing real promise for the following seasons where it can only get much better. The trouble is there were no following seasons, as it was axed. So what^s the point in buying Season One on DVD when it^s just the beginning of the story, (then nothing,) as there^s no follow up or end.

Gone the way of the Firefly

A great magical-reality series based on a very likeable protagonist. Harry Dresden is a very original wizard - more gumshoe than Gandalf, with a rune-carved hockey stick for a staff and a drumstick as a wand.

The books (by Jim Butcher) are as good, even better maybe, although I have to say the changes made for the show are by and large good calls.

I would happily flush half of Sci-fi's lineup for a new series of this show. I really find it hard to believe they cancelled this.

Season 2 PLEASE!

Stumbled on the Dresden Files epsiode 1 on the SciFi channel and enjoyed it so much I bought the box set as couldn't wait a week for the next one!

Thought it was a very well written show with a great cast and SUCH a shame that at present the SciFi channel have no plans to make a season 2.

This really is a show you can watch with the whole family and after watching season 1 I was left wanting more and feeling that there really is so much more that can be done with this show and all of which makes for GREAT entertainment. SO Season 2 if you please :-)

Great show - too soon gone.

I've not read the books, so I came to this fresh. Whether or not it's faithful to the novels, it's a good show. I can't understand some of the more negative reviews. What do we have? A sort of down on his luck gumshoe, who happens to be a wizard, a cop, who okay might be too glamorous, but gives him a run for his money, a ghost living in a skull, played brilliantly by Terrence Mann. Bizarrely, Paul Blackthorne, who's not American adopted an American accent and Terrence Mann, who is American adopted a British one.

It's a shame there are so few shows, because this did deserve to have a longer shelf life. But some of the shows are very clever, with a good mix of comedy and suspense. I personally think the use of CGI is fine, and they don't actually use it as often as you might expect (in terms of the magical, monstery stuff - there's probably loads of things in there that the audience aren't supposed to notice). Even though some of the subject matter has been dealt with in other shows (vampires, werewolves, ghosts, shapeshifters etc.) the writers of the show managed to find new ways of making them interesting and different.

Overall, I really enjoyed this show and wish it had continued. I bought the DVDs because of the recommendations and obviously plenty of other people liked it too.

If you like any kind of show with a 'fantasy' element that's still grounded in the world you know this is definitely the show for you. A crime that it was cancelled, but worth the price of admission.
