a brilliant little game worth buying for a small price in pennies. basically the point in the game is to build a galactic empire within 100 or so systems and conquer your enemies with your empires resources by what ever means you stumble up on, wheather it is ion cannons to pulse lasers or even crystal cannons! to organic based technology or through diplomacy and destruction of whole systems via the sun.

however what got the three stars was the lack of other stuff like music, random events or anything other then waiting for an attack and something that can tip the balance some what. however apart from that its worth buying and playing for certain.

Give it a try. and with the price of the game, its not gonna cost you anything really.

Getting better and better.

I actually bought this off Steam when it first came out so I didn't have to wait the several months before the UK release - I should have waited. Only now is this game coming into its full potential. Out of the box the AI won't put up much of a fight but already there are some great mods coming out to improve the challenge. I would particularly recommend IRM (Inter-Related Mod) and the Balance Mod.

Unlike many 4X games there's no single player campaign mode and new players may feel thrown in at the deep end but there are friendly communities over at spaceempires5.com (the official site) and at the shrapnelgames site (which published the previous game) to name but two. In fact without these communities Space Empires 5 would be a lot harder to recommend.

One word of caution however (and the main reason this isn't scoring 5s) the game is still a work in progress and the lone developer is still beavering away fixing bugs and generally enhancing the game. There's a patch release on a 4 week cycle, roughly. Perhaps try the demo first but make sure it's the 1.25 (at least) version as the earlier one is no longer representative of the current version.
