Life on Mars : Complete BBC Series 2 [2007]
What makes it even more surprising is that all the ingredients were there for it to go so tragically wrong. The central premise, that for unknown reasons modern day police detective Sam Tyler wakes up in the 1970s, is fraught with potential potholes, yet the creators of Life On Mars twist it very much in their favour, delivering a skilful, taut comparison between policing then and policing now. It’s this clash of approach that provides many of Life On Mars’ sparks, but nonetheless, it has much more than that going for it. It boasts, for instance, a terrific level of attention to detail, and weaves in quality narrative too, with Tyler frequently caught between unravelling his predicament, the crimes before him, and his 1970s’ colleagues with their 1970s’ tactics. This second, and final, series wraps things up surprisingly well, and consistently delivers laughs, action and plenty of pub talk off the back of it. It’s also a delight to revisit Life On Mars, and that makes this collected boxset of the episodes of season two an absolute must for any fan of gritty, interesting and terrifically entertaining British drama. Quite, quite brilliant. --Jon Foster ReviewsAbsoluty Brilliant Review date: 2008-05-14 Rating: 10 out of 10 This is definitly one of the best shows i have watched in a long time, it seems to include everything you could wish for in a show. The storyline for this show is a piece of genius, however someone thought of this a do not know, it is original and at the same time great. Its not just the storyline which is great, the charectors created are marvelous as well, making the show brilliant. This the second and final series of the show which continous on from the fantastic first series which was just as good as the second. The series still follows Sam trying to get home, while still trying to understand why he is here in the first place. A must watch show for all. BRILLIANT.BRILLIANT.BRILLIANT.BRILLIANT.BRILLIANT Review date: 2008-05-04 Rating: 10 out of 10 The Poms make up for their terrible cricket with absolutely brilliant drama. This is the best mini-series I have seen in a long lifetime, which I hope continues even longer. That is also what I would have liked Life on Mars to do. I will never remember Camberwick Green in the same way again! Review date: 2008-04-04 Rating: 10 out of 10 I am one of those sad individuals who learn about a rave new TV show two thirds the way into the second series and as such, having missed the first series and a half, had no idea what to expect. The first episode I watched in both series was the final one of series 2. My timing has never been that good! So when Ashes To Ashes came on I watched all of that - and look forward to the chance to get my hands on Keeley Hawes (did I mean that?) again when it comes out on DVD. So, to get the gist, I bought series 1 a couple of weeks ago and series 2 last week. Then, after a lot of watching DVDs I understood that final episode - or did I? The whole idea is unique in a sense, unless you discount Dr Sam Beckett, for that is another series altogether, and the creation of DCI Gene Hunt is altogether fantastic but what entertainment! Laugh? There were moments I was crying with laughter. My wife says he reminds her of me - Mmmm. But I was not prepared for the opening sequence for the later episode in series 2 which began with a mock version of Camberwick Green, with Sam Tyler coming out of the box to be asked how he was doing. What happened next was a coffee moment - if I had a cat it would have been covered! Buy this, along with series 1 and have a great time. I cannot wait to sit and watch the whole thing once again, from start to finish. Great TV. Worth the licence fee just to watch this! More surreal Review date: 2008-03-22 Rating: 10 out of 10 Unlike most other reviewers, I found this series less good than series 1, probably because everything pointed towards it ending. I found that this made the 1973 events less exhilarating than the first series. However, I still give it five stars for the brilliant acting, good script, political incorrectness and pace. However, I think I will be re-watching series 1 more than this series.
