ATRAC abandoned by Sony leaving customers in the lurch
Review date: 2007-12-15 Rating: 4 out of 10
This player has good sound for both downloaded tunes and radio and the best battery life of any player I have owned - about 30 hours or more of listening.
But now Sony are abandoning their proprietary ATRAC format. People with this player can put MP3 files onto it, but only by using the clunky Sony Sonic Stage software. Sony's answer to people with libraries of ATRAC format downloads is "put them onto a CD". I can also attest to the inconvenience of trying to use Sonic Stage with my Walkman after changing to a new computer - I had to email Sony to get the system unlocked and working again - though to their credit they were quite helpful.
The player is incompatible with Windows Media Player.
I originally rated this as 5 stars have downrated to two stars following Sony's thoughtless treatment of their customers.

But don't use it in the Gym !!!
Review date: 2007-04-30 Rating: 4 out of 10
I bought this while on holiday in Hawaii ... thinking that I'll never need to take it back. But less than a year later and it's dead. The reason appears to be that I used it in the gym and it's not waterproof. So it filled up with sweat (yuk!)
Who knew that you couldn't use a portable mp3 player in the gym.
I have now bought a new 700 series model with the much better headphones, although I haven't dared use this in the gym yet. Will probably purchase a docking station (CPF-NW001) for the gym, rather than risk another one dying. This one has a three year warranty though from a local shop !!
The best MP3 in the world

I have had this MP3 for a year and don't think that i have gone a week without listening to it. The sound quality is unreal, I have an iron maiden live cd on this MP3 and it just feels like you're there in the crowd. The fm radio is handy to have, but i rarely use it. The 1 GB memory is a bit of a downside but i don't think anyone would listen to more than 200 tracks that they like. There is a large range of displays to chose from which you can easly change at a touch of a button. The software that is provided by sony to upload music on the MP3 is okay. That just about covers this MP3.
BUY THIS MP3!!!!
Cuts the mustard - sound and style

I wanted decent sound, long battery life as I use this when I go away sailing - and decent VHF radio would be a plus. I researched this thoroughly and decided on the NW E507. Plenty of the reviews suggested that this was a good player but over priced. But the prices are dropping out of sight and I eventually found one at under £70.
I haven't been disappointed. I was geared for clunky sonic stage and having downloaded version 4 found this much less bad than I had expected.
I listen to classical music ranging from Bach and earlier though to Britten and later. I replaced the boxed headphones with Sennheiser MX500s. With these, the sound is splendid.
What came as a great surprise is the quality of the VHF radio - sound and reception - unexpectedly good. Much, much better than the small portable radios that have accompanied me in the past.
Yes, it's only got 1 GB memory but I am gradually down loading my collection onto my PC - and changing my selection from time to time is painless. In any event, I don't really want to have to scroll through everything I own whn making choices. Fir me, 40 or so CDs ia quite enough at anyone time.
The battery life (40 hours) appears to be as claimed.
It looks fabulous and is really tiny. I am well pleased and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't need to have their whole collection with them at all times.
More like a portable Radio

Be very careful with this 'Walkman'. The Software you HAVE to use with this player is the worst i have ever some experienced (if you can get it to even work!) I have a creative labs mp3 player with is perfect to use, drag and drop tracks straight onto the player but no Sony have to difficult with their own players. Believe the lower ratings on other reviews the software used to convert MP3's to be compatible is a nightmare, i've tried to think of something positive to say but there isn't any.
The only good think about this player is that it looks and feels like a state of the art piece of kit and it is massively let down by software Sony supply. (reminds me of Starforce protection.....) Nice radio quality though but its very expensive to be used as a portable radio.
Take my advice and the other reviewers with similar stories and avoid this player.
