Amazon.co.uk Review

The third instalment of the Griswold family saga is a significant improvement over their previous vacation (National Lampoon's European Vacation). Disaster-prone dad (Chevy Chase) discovers just how dangerous the Christmas season really is, as the Griswolds' old-fashioned holiday celebration turns out to be more "Bah! Humbug!" than Christmas cheer. Chase is right at home with the outrageous slapstick and often cheerfully tasteless humour and John Hughes's script is stuffed full of classic Christmas movie references. However, Randy Quaid practically steals the film as the unemployed relative with his malicious grin and mooching lifestyle. Not exactly a holiday classic and a bit spotty but this gag-filled comedy is just obnoxious enough for the Scrooge lurking inside everyone. And fear not, a happy ending awaits all. Watch for future star Juliette Lewis as Chase's teenage daughter. --Sean Axmaker

A classic
Review date: 2008-11-26 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is a great movie `cause it has a little something for everyone. I watch it with my boyfriend (who is pretty reluctant to anything too "christmassy"), because I want to see as many christmasmovies as possible in december, and this is one out of a few he is willing to watch with me. It`s funny and entertaining enough to keep him sitting still, and it also has enough christmas spirit to make me happy! :)

Christmas isn't the same without it
Review date: 2008-09-29 Rating: 10 out of 10

I LOVE this film! I cannot let a year go by without watching it. I defy anyone not to crack up watching Chevy Chase on that saucer sled. Hilarity itself. If you haven't seen it, buy it. If you have seen it, buy it anyway.

Part of our Christmas 'build-up' routine... is it yours?

Chevy Chase and gang star in what was the last good National Lampoons Film (don't get me started on the Vegas one...) with lots and lots of laughs. The DVD transfer is great - included many small scenes that I've never seen before, but lacks really on extra features.
The acting as usual is top-notch, especially from hill-billy bum Eddy and his wild family. Christmas wouldn't be the same without this film!

Chaotic Christmas fun
Review date: 2007-12-09 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is probably my favourite Christmas film (and there's plenty of competition!).

Why can I sit down and watch this every Christmas? It's probably Chevy Chase's best film, for one thing: he's on top form as an everyman character trying desperately to achieve the impossible by creating the perfect Christmas for his family. He has an ordeal to come through before it all comes together, including bad luck and misunderstandings. There's a good combination of memorable dialogue and visual/slapstick comedy, resulting in a very entertaining mix. Much of the comedy timing is spot on, particularly from Chase, and every scene involving Clark (Chase) and freeloading, thick Cousin Eddie (Randy Quaid in fine form) is a joy. There are several nods to other films (including Halloween!), some well-played pathos to contrast with the comedy, and the film also has something to say about the commercialisation of Christmas and about families in general.

If you can get into the American sense of humour, this is a film to leave you with a grin on your face, and a warm Christmassy glow by the time it ends (partly because whatever happens at your own Christmas, it's unlikely to work out as chaotically as this family's Christmas!).

ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE CHRISTMAS FILM!!!!
Review date: 2007-12-07 Rating: 10 out of 10

Never ever get tired of watching this film - have been known to watch it in the summer as it is a really fabulous feel good factor. all the family will relate to this - tiresome family coming round, pressure of delivering the goods etc - love Christmas?? get this film.
