Amazon.co.uk Review

Just as the new film is a great improvement on the already solid original, so too is Spider-Man 2: The Movie (the game) a significant improvement on previous video game simulations of New York's friendly neighbourhood web-slinger.

As you'd expect, the new game works along the same basic lines as the last one but is actually a very noble attempt to completely expand the concept and the way it's implemented. The biggest change is the that the game is now much more free-form, rather than being strictly mission based, and you can swing around New York City all you like, getting involved in side quests (such as stopping minor robberies) before getting around to the wider plot.

The actual business of web-slinging has been greatly improved so that your webbing now actually connects with buildings, instead of just attaching to thin air, and so the whole business of getting around the city becomes more "realistic". The combat system has also been completely overhauled, although it's still fair to say that the interior levels are far less entertaining than bouncing around New York and getting involved in aerial scraps.

The game realises this though and the majority of the action now takes place outside as you not only follow the plot of the movie, taking on main bad guy Dr Octopus, but also tackling some of Spidey's other villains from the comic books, including the Vulture, Rhino and Shocker--as well as meeting alternative love interest Black Cat. Hopefully someday all comic book games will be this good.--David Jenkins

Challenging but fun

I agree with the very positive reviews from Amazon users here. The game is complex, well though out, loads of fun (the New Yorker passers by who holler out abuse or cheer Spidey on are very entertaining), the gameplay lets you actually feel like SPider-Man without being too hard, it's true to the spirit of the comics and the film, the levels aren't too restrictive or too unfocussed, and in all in all, I'm very happy-real value for money.

Better than expected!
Review date: 2007-06-10 Rating: 10 out of 10

This game was much better than expected. I was thoroughly disappointed with the first Spider-man game which I found boring and incredibly hard. Spider-man 2 however is much, much better. It is more exciting, the graphics are well improved and Spider-man is better than he has ever been before! Unlike Spider-man (1) you can only swing when there are buildings nearby where-as in the first Spider-man game you just went up and up when there weren't even any buildings in reach! Nope. Spider-man 2 has it all. It is not too hard and it is not too easy which was very good because it was challenging, fun and sometimes a little frustrating! Don't let that put you off though. How can a game be fun if everything is too easy? Some bits were hard and it wasn't always clear as to what you had to do but the problems were always solved. Others bit were easy but not so easy that you could play it with your eyes closed.

This game also has a very good bonous - it is free roaming and you can go anywhere you like. You can't go in the sewers or swim like you can in Spider-man 3 but that doesn't matter. There are plenty of things you can explore and go e.g. the museum, pizza shop (where you! Yes, you deliver pieces to costumers. If you are late or wreck the pizza you receive bad cred. And if everything goes perfectly you receive bonous points which are very handy) and much much more. You can always buy combo moves from the Spidey store which you can use to either use your skills and moves to beat up bad guys or just mess about in the air and do tricks which is quite fun. Citizens will always want your help and will supply you with missions which include beating up standard robbers, saving people from a sinking ship/falling from building or stopping muggers. There are others as well but those are just a few examples. You don't have to do this but it is the only way you'll pass levels etc. while free roaming citizens will also call for help! A crime can happen even when you aren't on a mission so watch out. Robbers will always be willing to stop the Amazing Spider-man!

This game also follows the exact same story line as the film only with a few extras. Not only have you got to battle the famous Dock Ock but you also must battle aganist the Rhino, Mysterio, Shocker and of coarse Dock Ock. This may sound like a lot but it was fun and challenging as well. The Shocker was probably the easiest! Not only that but the Black Cat also becomes your sidekick for a while. She helps you fight crime which was cool. In what Spider-man game do you get to have a sidekick? (Apart from Friend or Foe!) Do everything a spider can do. Scale up buildings, swing on webs and leap or dive from building to building! I could swing and jump for hours without getting bored. The scenery/graphics have been captured perfectly as well. They have added every detail and every building you could possibly imagine. The cut scenes are also great and the characters in the film have come back to supply the voices which is another small bonous. This is a fantastic game and I defintely reccomend it. Everything - 5/5.

the amazing spiderman 2!

i think this game was one of the best games of the year because the introduction of the free roaming system was great and the combat system has also improved from the first game. the best bit is getting to the statue of liberty the trick is to hang on the helicopters till another one comes then swing onto it and keep doing that. this is by far the best superhero game ever!!! 10/10

Spins a web, and swings high!

I managed to pre-order the game at my local GAME back in late spring-early summer 2004. Since I got the game a week before I saw the film I decided to play only the opening bit where you learn your basic moves and stop a lady being mugged. Although this only takes five minutes to do once per life, I knew that the game was going to be as good as it was anticipated.

After seeing the film, I obviously decided to proceed with my game and boy I'm glad I did. You get near enough the ultimate Spiderman experience (especially when you unlock swing speed level 8) as you swing around New York. And, although you cannot go to Ellis Island or the Statue Of Liberty straight away, you get total freedom to roam around New York, go up from and down to street level at any time on exterior missions or at will. Asides the main story missions (which sees you take on not only Doctor Octopus, but Rhino, Mysterio and Shocker) there are side-missions-which sadly get very repetitive but are still fun, challenges for you to do and secret tokens scattered around the city (some of which are VERY HARD to find).

Overall a good Spiderman game. Let's hope though that no 3 will not be so repetitive on the side-missions!

great

this is a great game. a tip for liberty island, go to a nearby building and web on a helicopter as it flys by. halfway across to lib island switch helicopter. it is a very easy way of getting there and is better than the hard other way.
