Amazon.co.uk Review

Elite Force on the PC is a Trektastic first-person shooter set in the Voyager universe. The story plays like an episode of the hit show. The ill-fated USS Voyager answers a distress call only to find out that it's a carefully prepared trap that transports them to an alien ship graveyard from which there appears to be no escape. Their predicament forces Voyager's command crew to create the Hazard Team, a specialist squad charged with the task of exploring the other ships stranded in the mysterious vortex and discovering a way home.

This is standard first-person shooter fare with a Star Trek twist. You take on the role of Alex (or Alexandra) Munroe and get to wander about various sci-fi backdrops with ever increasing firepower. The story is well done and you really feel like you are participating in an episode of Star Trek; the weapons are imaginative enough to keep you interested. There's the usual array of puzzles along the way and some surprises and you get to take on the Borg in your attempt to get the crew of the ill-fated Voyager back on the path home.

One of the best aspects of the game is the multi-player experience. You can play either online or offline against bots in a number of sets from the holodeck including the Borg Cube and a Wild West scenario. Unlike the first-person campaign you can also play as your favourite character--cue Seven of Nine running around in ridiculously tight lycra. Basically this is a brilliantly done, atmospheric and immersive FPS for fans of the genre and of Star Trek alike. --Kristen Bowditch

It seems that my perspective will be in the minority amongst these reviews but I feel a little balance should be maintained. I am both a geek and a gamer but, crucially, I wouldn't identify myself as a fanatical devotee of either. I'm certainly not a Trekkie. I played through Elite Force with a friend of the same persuasion and we were frankly amazed. Or perhaps that should be horrified.

The plot of this game should delight a certain type of Trek fan (especially the ones who prefer Kirk) as it brings an edge to the Voyager storyline that was long overdue. The storytelling isn't particularly skilled but the themes and settings are a welcome change from Voyager's sterile interior. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the actual game.

Any gamer will know that when a game based on a popular property such as a film or TV series is released, it rarely attempts anything new or risky. Elite Force takes this conservatism to ridiculous degrees. The actual gameplay is outdated and stale. Our frowns turned to wry grins, then to outright laughter as we waded through AI and level design we last saw in Quake. By the end of the game (which was comfortably completed in a few hours), we were playing to see how bad it could get. We were not disappointed by the final boss which (without spoilers) embodied the worst stereotypes from the last ten years of gaming.

Elite Force is one of the worst cash-ins I have ever seen. While, for some, romping around in the Star Trek universe may be enough to justify the cost of entry, unless you're a shameless Trekkie, stay clear of this away mission. No-one's coming back alive.

Reviews

patchy but playable
Review date: 2004-12-01 Rating: 6 out of 10

It's nice to hear the actual characters' voices on this game (with the exception of Seven of Nine but it's a close second) - the game is also nicely playable with real Star-Trek style missions to complete.

However, the graphics are, frankly, pants. The neck/colloar movements are hideous and the movments themselves are a little moonwalky for my taste. You can't really interact with NPCs all that much - when you try you're met with a rude response.

Some of your teammates' one-liners get repetitive too. "Well they know we're here now" occurs far, far too often.

A nice touch is that if you're too inaccurate with your firing and hit your teammates once to often, they turn on you and won't stop firing til you're dead, which is a nice reaction.

That said, the game is still ridiculously playable, if a little linear - you can't really deviate from the course but it's still sufficiently challenging to be worth a go.

A superb game

I must say, this is one brilliant startrek game. It is very playable and runs on the majority of computers. The online Holomatch is fun and is almost unimproveable. The Borg levels give me the creeps, so I'm glad I can skip them. The game has a perfect balance between beginner's levels and experienced player's levels. The story is mostly solid and the expansion pack makes it even better. A must-have for Trekkies. Buy it now!

its good but a bit short

This game is amazing even if you hate star-trek, which i'm sad to say i do. The storyline is brilliant. The only flaw is that it wasn't long enough for me. Especially after playing elite force 2 which is far, far bigger. Still at this amazing price it is worth getting!

Elite Force - possibly one of the best games ever played
Review date: 2003-04-30 Rating: 10 out of 10

I wasn't one of the first people queuing to buy Elite Force, but I wasn't one of the last either. I actually didn't buy the game until after it had been out for some time. However, once I did - I was hooked! From shooting the first shot against the Borg, to finally defeating the Forge alien, it is one immense action game - with surprises around the corner.

And the best part is - you can always replay it and change your tactics! That's what I did, and different things happened in each mission.

Also - once completed, it's fun to put the cheats in and go back and have a little fun killing Captain Janeway...you all know how she gets on your nerves!

I can't wait for the next Elite Force game to come out, on the 24th June 2003 - i'll definately be one of the first to get it.

And with the fantastic offers that amazon.co.uk provide - I'll definately get it through them!

To sum up - this is a game that anyone can enjoy, whether you're a trekker/trekkie or even someone who has never watched an episode in your life. The game is very self explanatory.

Enjoy!
