Amazon.co.uk Review

Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman) directs the screen adaptation of Terence McNally's play Frankie and Johnny at the Clair de Lune, the story of a short-order cook (Al Pacino) who drives a waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) crazy with his adamant courtship and mixed messages. The film is okay and not much more than that, the major stumbling block being Marshall's failure to scrub away enough star veneer on Pacino and Pfeiffer to accept them as minimum-wage drones with nowhere to go but toward each other. Fortunately, Marshall's feel for the texture offered by supporting players--Hector Elizondo as a café owner, Nathan Lane as Pfeiffer's inevitably gay neighbour-buddy, Kate Nelligan as another lonely waitress--keeps things interesting enough. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

How can Amazon be so wrong !
Review date: 2007-12-02 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is Pacino and Pfeiffer - not since Scarface have they starred together and with the spectacular but bloody end of the former film - it is fantastic to see them together cleaning teeth at the end of this film....

Amazon review seems to imply the star quality is not used - rubbish - these two were made to play off each other - watch Scarface and then watch this - its like a reunion but in better days. Al Pacino carries both roles off within 10 years of each other - the comparison is dramatic as this film is light, entertaining and above all else - finishes on a high - watch it with your loved one, or when you have just split up - either way hope is here - thanks Al and Michelle.....

Great actors playing damaged people
Review date: 2007-10-06 Rating: 8 out of 10

This is a thoughtful, adult film that explores complex feelings and interactions among a group of people, who in different ways have difficult lives and little money. Pacino and Pfeiffer play the dominant characters whose attraction for one another is deftly portrayed. The peripheral roles are excellently fleshed out by the screenplay and by the actors, which enriches the overall feeling of film. The two leads largely manage to be believable as ordinary people: Pfeiffer a bit more convincing than Pacino whose screen charisma keeps shining through.

Pacino and Pfeiffer hit it really big
Review date: 2007-06-24 Rating: 10 out of 10

After their "romance" in 'Scarface' they (Pacino and Pfeiffer) decide to have a real romance, and it is a pretty good one. Not that the film is great but in this kind of films all I hope for is a little chemistry, some nice characters and a few laughs. This film has it all.

The chemistry between Al Pacino (Johnny) and Michelle Pfeiffer (Frankie) works because in the movie they have to fight for that chemistry. Al Pacino is a great actor but I think Michelle Pfeiffer was better here. Although I loved a couple of particular scenes with Pacino (his Greek-dance-scene is great) I think the character of Michelle Pfeiffer has more depth and she does exactly the right thing for that character. And of course she is a beautiful woman. You must love her.

The nice characters, besides Frankie and Johnny, are the gay neighbour (Nathan Lane), the boss of the restaurant where almost the whole cast is working (Hector Elizondo) and Nedda and Cora (Jane Morris and Kate Nelligan), two of the waitresses.

The story is simple. Johnny is just released from prison and he starts working in the restaurant where Frankie happens to be a waitress. He falls in love and although she has trouble to admit it she is doing the same thing. Of course there are some (a lot of) complications on the way but you know how it is going to end. A nice feel-good movie.

a showcase for the art of conversation
Review date: 2007-06-08 Rating: 8 out of 10

I will always remember this movie for the sheer amount of dialogue between Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino. They have long conversations that are quick-witted,aggressive,poignant,upsetting,loving,absurd,and just about any kind of verbal exchange people can have. And this is what makes Frankie And Johnnie such good entertainment - we've all had conversations like these and can relate to them.

Watch it over and over again!!!!!
Review date: 2006-12-06 Rating: 10 out of 10

This is a classic and my all time favourite movie! A bit depressing at times but in a nice way, and inspiring too, so real and so engouraging....Love is out there, whether you like it or not, whether you want it or not....You can try to resist but it will get you eventually....Great acting from everyone...Famous and not so much...It worths bying 100% and have it in your collection!!!
