Amazon.co.uk Review

New Zealand filmmaker Lee Tamahori (The Edge) directed this brutal but powerful story drawn from the culture of poverty and alienation enveloping contemporary Maori life. Rena Owen plays the beleaguered mother of two boys--one of whom is already in prison while the other contemplates membership in a gang--and a daughter whose potential is being smothered at home. Temuera Morrison gives an outstanding and sometimes shocking performance as the violent head of the household, more adept at keeping up his social stature within his community of friends than holding down a job. Once Were Warriors pulls no punches, literally and figuratively, but despite the rough going, Tamahori gives us a rare and important insight into a people digging down deep to find their pride. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

This is a review of the actual dvd which is pictured, the region 1 New Line edition.

The region 2 UK EIV release was a disgrace, in 4:3 pan and scan.

This version of the film preserves it's original aspect ratio, which is anamorphic (so it fills a 16x9 display) and is an excellent video transfer, with a very good 5.1DTS soundtrack. As good as any dvd I have seen.
There are well thought out extras, including a full length director's commmentary and commentary for the 2 trailers as well, explaining how each was conceived.

There is also an Australian CE region 4 dvd (and now a blu ray albeit 1080i) which include a short film, although I do not own either edition so cannot comment on their worth.

Oh the film itself, just one of the most powerful and gut wrenching I have ever seen.
Right from the opening scene it is the outstanding Rena Owen's movie.
I am not taking anything away from Temuera and the excellent performances from the three young actors who play the older siblings, but during and after her speeches towards the end you will have a lump in your throat and tears in your eyes if you have a soul.

Powerful and shocking...

This is as brilliant a film as it is dark, downbeat and disturbing. It's about a struggling family in New Zealand whom the long sufferring wife is trying to save her family and her marriage. The domestic violence scenes are horrible, the violence is excessive but everyone did great performances.I was reduced to tears though.

Power without glory
Review date: 2009-04-17 Rating: 10 out of 10

They may have been warriors once, now they are unemployed and mostly drunk. Especially Jake Heke, who seems a nice enough guy when sober, gets a little too powerful with his fists when he is drunk, beating up any punk in his favourite McClutchy's or else his wife. For him, life is an endless party, paid for by the dole money. When one son is taken to a Borstal home and another one joins a vicious gang, all Jake can do is shrug and have another beer. It is only when he realises that he has driven his daughter to commit suicide that something like thinking is setting in...

Once Were Warriors allows a disconcerting view into not only Maori life but the life of poor people all over the world.

The movie is great, powerfull and impressive; certainly nothing for someone with poor nerves. Unfortunately the dvd offers no extras and no subtitles.

Brutal

This is the side of New Zealand that you probably would never see. A sad story and some dark humour mingled with the real issues the film tackles
