I liked it better than I thought I would.

Our erstwhile heroes, Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Dr Strange and Black Bolt trick Hulk into a space shuttle and send him into deep space so that he couldn't threaten humanity any more. Hulk lands the planet Saakar, and goes from lowly slave to Emperor and falls in love with Caiera who then falls pregnant with his child. Now that Hulk has found peace, his new world is ripped from him by the shuttle that he came in on.

As a result, Hulk is now incandescent with rage, and it doesn't help that he's actually a bit brighter (using more of his brain) and Hulk's coming back to earth intent on administering a smack down to the men who did this to him.

This book is like the equivalent of one of those summer block buster movies - it's violent, with big scenes ably rendered by John Romita Jr. Normally, I'm not a fan of his art- because I find it to be blocky and I hate his faces - but it works here. Romita can do scale, he can do bulk, and has an immediacy in his figures that is literally in your face. Another way this book is like one of those summer block bluster movies is the plot: if you think about it too long, there are a few areas that the writer didn't really think through... like, how long was Hulk away from earth from him to rise up from fighting monsters to be Emperor? Then for Hulk to temper his rage into something as sharp and dangerous as a samurai's blade?

Believe me, Hulk's rage, once focused and intense is a terrible thing. He mows down all of earth's heroes, and is ready to lay waste the earth until... I'll leave that for you to read. Then, after reading the main story, there are two 'What ifs' stories included relating to World War Hulk.

Overall, even if you're not into the Hulk, you should find this graphic novel a good read. It has some good lines, like when people are going into battle, you hope that your opponent dies well. The Hulk is called 'The World Breaker' and is shades of Conan the Barbarian in terms of grim resolve and sentiment.

staright forward and enjoyable.

The idea behind world war hulk is simple enough, and simple is good here it is all about the action. Sadly presented here is the world war hulk mini series which covers the overall story arc but large meaty portions of the story were done in spin offs, and while less important they certainly added to the world wide aspect of it, where as here it seems to be set in new york. The art by John Romita jr is as good as always, very clear and easy to follow. Well worth checking out for all marvelites.

Hulk Smash Everyone

Here is a book whose cover and title say it all.
With a good story and simple theme (revenge), the book excels for the sheer feeling of might you get when reading it.
The art by John Romita Jr. really expresses the rage the Hulk is in, giving him that "Hulk smash" look that everyone is truly afraid.
The writing by Greg Pak makes the dialogues that the Hulk has with everyone add an extra feel to it.
One of the Hulk's line describes his rage the best: Never stop making them pay.
It is, in my oppinion, a good reading that adds a great story to the Green Giant library.

Hulk Smash!!
Review date: 2008-06-12 Rating: 10 out of 10

After the let down and stupidity of the "Civil War" event (you're not american unless you have A Myspace and watch Nascar), there was a lot of anticipation for WWH. Part of a trilogy of Hulk sagas, starting with Planet Hulk and ending with Skaar: Son Of The Hulk, WWH, doesn't fail to deliver what it promised, hulk smashing things.

Having returned from Sakaar, Hulk is seeking revenge for its destruction. The action never reall lets up from th start, with Hulk taking on the Avengers, Fantastic Four, Dr Strange and the Sentry.

Reading WWH Hulk is a bit like reading a Hulk Vs thread on the internet, and although a massive fan of the Hulk since Planet, the excuses used for him winning are sometimes a bit shoddy, something some on the internet refer to as "plot armor", he's so angry he can do anything because it moves the plot along.

John Romita Jr, one of the better artists of Marvel's stock, does well. Sometimes during the many fight scenes his art begins to suffer and not make a lot of sense, but it's good enough to convey the emotions of characters without making things so bad you don't want to read.

All in all, it's everything I ever wanted from a Hulk book. It has enough depth to make it more than just a bunch of maniacs kicking each other, but enough smashing to be fair to the violence expected from Hulk.

More like Hulkling

When I first saw this was coming out I thought wow, the Hulk is coming back to Earth and he is gonna go nuts and have a massive fight with the Illuminati( Ironman, Dr Strange, Black Bolt, Professor X and Namor). I never read Planet Hulk, but I got the general idea of it from reading Illuminati.
The first couple of issues of World War Hulk were good, but by the third it had slowed down and didn't really seem to be going anywhere. The artwork by John Romita jr is alright, but its not his best work and lets the book down abit.
The World War Hulk tie-ins in my opion were alot better than the main book...
Overall this book is alright if like the Hulk, the army and one of Marvel's most power heroes going toe to toe, but if you want to read a good story that doesn't seem to just disappear half way through the book, I recomment Civil War.
