An excellent read.
Review date: 2008-05-15 Rating: 10 out of 10
An excellent read. I read it while catching the sun in my garden. The author truly knows her subject and brings the artist and his paintings to life. It is also lavishly illustrated, so that almost every painting discussed can be viewed while reading about its conception, realisation and reception by the public. This was a great boon as many books on art have left me frustrated and turning to other books or the internet in order to find out exactly what the painting the author is discussing looks like! My only quibble is that I would like to have had biographies of some of the models who were obviously close to Tuke, and to know what happened to them after they stopped posing for him. An analysis of their character might help one to understand why he chose certain types and how they influenced his art. However I think that subject is probably best dealt with by another book, divorced from the remit of `Catching the Light' which specialises in discussing Tuke's actual output.
