The rise & fall of Nagash
Review date: 2008-12-29 Rating: 8 out of 10

Games Workshops `Time of Legends' series details some of the greatest characters from the Warhammer Worlds history and this first book in that series second trilogy details the rise and fall of the master of the undead, Nagash. Set in the Warhammer Worlds version of ancient Egypt, this book details Nagash's rise to power, his terrible reign and his defeat.

I really wanted to give this book the full five stars as Nagash has been my favourite character from Warhammer since I started playing the game more than fourteen years ago, but unfortunately while the story is great there are things that let the book down terribly. The main problem with the book is its rather erratic chronology with chapters about Nagash's rise to power as Priest King of Khemri interspaced between the chapters detailing his fall. While you should get use to this eccentric style, it does detract slightly from the story.

As well as this there are some changes to the established history of the characters involved and while most of these can be excused due to literary reasons, the changes get more pronounced the further the story goes on. The characterization of various characters is also slightly off as although Nagash is represented quit well Arkhan the Black on the other hand is somewhat off being very different to how he has been portrayed in previous versions of the story.

Overall this book has a good story that was spoiled slightly by a poor layout. The changes to established history probably wouldn't be much of an issue to those relatively new to Warhammer but when you have been playing the game as long as I have you tend to get hung up on these things. Despite the books fault though, it is still something of a must read for any collectors of the Tomb Kings or Vampire Counts armies as it will give them some incite into the origins of their forces.

Each to their own.....

I have to disagree with one of the previous reviews (3star one), firstly i found heldenhammer to be dissapointing, it was far to linear and the story was all to predictable. For me the story of nagash is fantasic, yes the writing style is slightly disfunctional but then so are the chracters in the stories. I found my allegiance to the sides in the story changed a few times during reading, which is great story telling....

if your not sure on this book, i'd say just buy it and see what you think, you could spend 4/5quid on a lot worse!

A bit of a disappointment

After the cracking first offering of the Legend's series (Heldenhammer) by the Black Library I was really looking forward to the tale of Nagash and whilst it is well written with good descriptive prose I was left unhappy with this offering as I felt that the battle sequences that were used to break up the historical aspect of the story distracting which detracted from the tale as a whole. Don't get me wrong the battles are excellently created, the historical aspect cracking yet it's the way that they just don't seem to gel together that took away from my reading pleasure. If you love to play the undead on the Warhammer Battlefield then this is essential reading for you, yet as a fan of the stories then I was unsatisfied. A great shame to be honest.

my pleasure.

Wow what a read.Non stop action all the way.Now i like novels with battles in them, but this takes it to a new level. From the the very begining there's massed armies knocking hell out each other. But its how the author decribes the battles with a superb eye for details. You really feel that your in the thick of the action.I could almost smell the blood and feel the the dust in my eyes as warriors battled for victory. But what about the plot i hear you say!well all i can say about the main character is this. You will never have seen someone this evil. His ambition, his drive and sheer will to take over the world puts other tyrants from history in the shade. And what about the hero's.Every king and his subjects will have to fight to the death to survive.Even the magic in the story is brilliant. There are ghosts, demons, the undead and magical beasts thrown in as well.If you like big battles, stratagy and heros then this is the book for you.I can put my hand on my heart and say this is one of the best novels to come from the Black Libary for a long time. You have to read it!
