Awful
Review date: 2007-06-26 Rating: 2 out of 10

Whilst I think there's a lot of potential in the series, the characterisation of the supporting characters and the overall plotting of this is just dire and it's a shame because there's a lot of interesting world-building going on that could have been handled so much more convincingly. If you've started the series, then definitely give this one a miss.

Gravely Enjoyable

Grave Peril is book three in Jim Butchers series The Dresden Files... the other two being Storm Front & Fool Moon.

Harry Dresden is the only wizard known to mankind and listed in the Chicargo yellow pages.

In his career he has faced dark wizards, large scorpions, over sexed vampires and the police suspecting him of supernatural crimes he didn`t commit.

However in this third installment Harry now faces ghosts, demons and faeries... and that`s the easy part.

Pursued by his Fye Godmother (or faerie Godmother - and I don`t mean of the wish granting kind), facing many restless ghosts and a powerful demon ghost Harry needs help.
And that help comes in the shape and form of his rightious companion and friend Michael.

Can Harry & Michael defeat their enemies and save the day or will they be condemned to hell.

This is yet another amazing sequal and worthy of being called possibly the best of the series that I have read to date.

Whatever you do I recommend you do NOT miss out on this book or this series - read The Dresden Files and be amazed.

Book 3 in the Dresden files series

(After Storm Front and Fool Moon)
Harry Dresden wizard PI (paranormal investigations) is back again. I do feel that to get the most out of the book you need to have read the previous 2 books.

This book has the most complex story so far, Harry is now seeing Susan Rodriguez who has an interest in Harry's invite to a vampire party to celebrate Bianca's (a vampire met in book 1) promotion.
Meanwhile Harry with the help of his sword wielding very Christian friend Michael is trying to find out who is stirring up and torturing the ghosts in Chicago, plus there is something attacking humans that are close to Harry.
Harry's faerie godmother puts her oar in just to complicate things further.
We also learn a lot more about the different paranormal groups in Harry's world.
As usual there is the odd bit of humour dropped in to lighten the load my favourite is Harry's costume when he goes to the vampires costume party.

The more I read of Harry the more he strikes me as being like Jim Rockford in the TV Rockford files but in a paranormal setting (poor, beaten up, sucker for the damsel, has a love/hate relationship with a particular cop etc).

A complex and serious detective story just set in a paranormal world

A wizard and a true Knight of the Cross battle against evil
Review date: 2004-01-13 Rating: 10 out of 10

Jim Butcher (Storm Front, Fool Moon) goes from strength to strength in this his third book in the Harry Dresden saga. The boundaries between the teeming streets of Chicago and the Never Never grow ever thinner and cause problems for our hard pressed Wizard P.I. Together with his friend Michael, a true Knight of the Cross, Harry races to save dozens of lives from a tormented ghost intent upon sucking the life out of babies in the local hospital's nursery.

A glimpse into the ghost's motivations reveals that it is being tortured and used to do the dirty deed, but who could force a ghost this powerful to do anything? That's what Harry must find out and put a stop to, but old alliances are tenuous things, and the police are acting very oddly toward him indeed. He cannot rely upon their help. Harry turns to another source for his information--his fairy Godmother. The same Godmother who not only wants to separate him from the girl he loves, but also wants to enslave him for eternity.

Grave peril is book three in the harry Dresden saga, but as another reviewer pointed out it can stand on its own merits. That's not to say it should. Readers will definitely benefit from reading this series in order: Storm Front, Fool Moon, Grave Peril.
