Not a book about Bruce Dickinson!
Review date: 2008-11-06 Rating: 2 out of 10

Those looking for a book on "The Man" need to look elsewhere...! This offering is more about record production and those around Bruce rather than being about the title character. For instance, when describing events prior to his reunification with Iron Maiden, the author dwells on the antics of the members of Bruce's solo band rather than what he was doing at the time. There is little new on his character or really what makes him tick, and as for early days with IM, he joins the band for NOTB and within a couple of sketchy chapters covering some epic and relentless tours, IM are said to be burnt out...!
For those wanting a fairly dull read about record production - fill your boots! For those really wanting to Die With Their Boots On - Go elsewhere

A Reasonable Stop Gap
Review date: 2007-08-11 Rating: 6 out of 10

In a world where biographies are published for any no-mark who's spent 2 weeks in the Big Brother house, it always amazed me that nobody has done one for Dickinson. Well, now someone has. Although unofficial, Joe Shooman's effort is an worthwhile read. But, considering the subject matter, it would be difficult not to fill a few hundred pages with Bruce's achievements. Neither Dickinson himself, anyone currently close to him or Maiden PLC have contributed to this book. Hence, a lot of it does rely on rehashed stories that any Maiden fan (of my vintage) would already be well aware of and the sources that they came from. There are a significant amount of inaccuracies on a scale similar to that of a Classic Rock magazine article. There is also heavy reliance on testimony from the (thankfully) long-forgotten Thunderstick. However, all that critisism aside, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Until an official biography/autobiography comes along I suppose it'll have to do.
