Amazon.co.uk Review
Tom Hanks stars in The 'Burbs, a sporadically funny extended sketch piece about a gaggle of suburban neighbours so preoccupied with mysteries taking place behind the closed doors of a newcomer that they go to extremes to look inside. The film is essentially a simple satire from director Joe Dante, for whom suburbia has been ripe territory for such comic-horror stories as Gremlins, Explorers, Matinee and Small Soldiers. Of all Dante's movies, The 'Burbs has the least story material to go around, and it depends heavily (and with modest success) on the comic powers of its cast--including Bruce Dern as a paranoid nut, Hanks as a Mr Normal type who loses perspective, and Rick Ducommun as Hanks' neurotic best friend. These appealing people hold one's attention, but by the end of the film, with nothing much having happened, even the cast can't mitigate an empty feeling. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com
Still watching it, and still laughing
Review date: 2004-07-15 Rating: 10 out of 10
If you have the appropriate sense of humour, you will laugh at this film forever. It carries more character quotes than any other film I can remember, like Bruce Dern's "Where you going Pinocchio", Corey Feldman's "No tan-lines today" or Tom Hanks " Who keeps a horse in their basement?" amongst others. The performances by the star cast are so strong that they completely take over what is a fairly ordinary storyline. The excellent directing catches some wonderful moments of real pace during a pedantic day in suburbia which comes alive with the antics of the various characters as they interact with their strange neighbours, the Klopeks. On average I watch this film once a month and still find new angles on the jokes and asides which pepper the script. Give it a chance and it will hook you in too.

A mysterious family moves into an old fixer-upper in the neighborhood. Strange comings, goings, and sounds are heard in the night. Add to this a bone that the dog has recovered from their recently spaded back yard.
Naturally the neighbors must face up to the challenge and prove or disprove roomers about another missing neighbor.
As much as the mystery it is the interaction among the neighbors that make this film. You are introduced to a cast of characters that if you live in the burbs you could easily identify with.
What ya got in the basement heir klopek!!!

A rather funny movie from 'Piranha' director Joe Dante, the 'burbs tells the tall tale of suspicious surburbanites, Tom Hanks, Rick Ducommun and Bruce Dern, and their race against time to uncover the truth of their barbaric neighbors. Fearing the worst after another neighbor in their street becomes missing, Hanks and his army of middle-aged avenging angels begin to spy on the small family of suspect butchers and eventually break into the house while they are away. Fantastic delivery of some cutting one-liners insures that this Dante project is a full-on hoot! Carrie Fisher and Corey Feldman excel in supporting roles, while veteran actor Henry Gibson, is brilliant as the demonic doctor. Totally underrated, but don't let it stop your fun!
