Encapsulating read on the Gumball Rally
Review date: 2005-06-11 Rating: 10 out of 10
Being an eccentric gumball fan, I strive for any information I can get about the happenings and shenanigans that happen along the 3000 mile route.
So I heared some guys had done it in a Volvo?! Well...... my experience of Volvo's was as a young boy, sat in the back of my dads Volvo (of course with the token Labrador in the boot) being overtaken by anything that had the kinetic energy of my pet snail. This cemented my suspicions that Volvo's were 'rubbish'.
So this guy had not only 'attempted' the gumball rally in one, but was going to write a book about it?? So my initial thoughts were that it would be badly written (seeing though it was to be written by a 'gumballer') and extremely boring (because these gumballers were in a 'volvo').
Could I of been any more wrong???
This has been a fabulous read! I have read many motoring, travelling, comedy books, but none that combine all three of these elements into such an encapsulating reading experience. My previous favourite writer in this genre 'was' Jeremy Clarkson. (Hence the 'was').
Clement explains the gumball and the cars in such a clear and understanding manner that now even my girlfriend can understand all the car anecdotes.
This book isn't just for die-hard gumball fans, and exotic car enthusiasts, it is for anyone that enjoys an easy to read good book, that is brutally honest (as Vicki Butler Henderson would know!) Clement's honesty is inspiring in this book and will keep a smile on your face from the first to the last page. My girlfriend can vouch for me on that one, as she and my dad have read it also!
And I can promise you that after reading it... you will want to buy a Volvo. Don't believe me?? Well read it then!

Highly entertaining
Review date: 2005-05-16 Rating: 10 out of 10
This is a hugely engaging read filled with amusing anecdotes and sharp observation, all set to the page-turning background of the Gumball rally. It is worth reading alone to get a view of life on the hedonistic riot of the Gumball - but the book is much more than that. Wilson is clearly a man with opinions and the book has some very funny and beautifully observed "soapbox moments". Also to be savoured is the rivarly between Wilson and Dunwoody - clearly best of friends but not beyond dastardly cunning when there are women at stake. All in all I loved this book for its wit and humour - it's fun and I couldn't recommend it more.
