Blood Ties: The Continuing Tale of the French Executioner
ReviewsOne of the Best This Year Review date: 2004-11-24 Rating: 10 out of 10 This is a fast paced adventure novel based on a real historical person Jean Rombaud, whose claim to fame was the fact that he beheaded Anne Boleyn. The book begins in 1555, it is nineteen years since the execution of England's queen, yet the mark of her witchery, her six fingered hand, stolen at her death is being sought as a weapon to use against her daughter Elizabeth. Jean's son is now working for the inquisition in Rome and is summoned by Cardinal Carafa and ordered to find the hand of Anne Boleyn. From the savagery of Sienna the book transports you to the New World, untouched by Europe's Christian hatred and sectism. This is a delightful novel which blends historical fact with fantasy. One of the best I've read this year. a follow up is not always a success Review date: 2004-09-14 Rating: 6 out of 10 I rather liked the French Executioner. So I was quite excited when "Blood Ties" was published as it continued the tale of the French Executioner. However, after having struggled through it, my excitment has turned rather sour. The tale of the French Executioner continues 20 years after the first part has ended. In many ways it is now the second generation taking over - Jean Rombaud's children and Anne Boleyn's daughter the future Queen Elisabeth are the focus of the tale. The subtitle " the worst wars are fought within C.C. Humphreys tries to continue his previous success but he does not succeed very well. It is demanding and actually quite boring to get into the book. The stories takes off far too late. Too many sub-plots and sub-stories are taken up, left off at some stage, then will be continued and of course have to be brought togther with the main story. So there is not a great flow. It actually drags on and on. Then suddenly one finds All in all I was disappointed with "Blood Ties" and I do hope that C.C. Humphreys let it rest there and does not continue with a third tale. The end already seems to indicate a possibility for that. Product Details/SpecificationsAuthors: C.C.
