Good but material not congruent with title.

I gave it four stars for the title which I feel is being marketed as a book to help YOU as a bodybuilder. It's certainly not going to equal inche gains in the gym. It's a five star book really, giving some brilliant "Beliefs" and attitudes and giving a human face and some history of the sport. I love the quote he says to the weight to psych himself up to force the last rep of a set: "You son-of-a-*****, I'm going to rip you off my chest, I'm going to throw you over my head! I don't care how much you weigh. I'm the man who's going to take you out. I'm going to be the master of you".

It's full of good bits like this that depart from the strict "science" of the sport.

However it won't "educate" you as a body builder. I've been on this for a while and got some good results elsewhere.

Definately worth ready his book "Arnold's Bodybuilding for Men" just to get all the jargon mastered, then move on to his "Encyclopia of modern body building" to really blast the knowledge out. Google all the terms and get other online searches to reinforce all the knowledge. Once that aims done, move onto Stuart McRobert's Brawn, then read "Beyond Brawn" and get hold of "Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-training Technique" (a book on good form - i.e. how to actually do all the routines)and Super Sqat by Randall J. Strossen (optinal). I'd also get the Anatomical Measuring Tape from Amazon, Barbell Pad (for those monster squats you will be doing), Heart Rate Monitor (Polar F6 is a good choice) and Body Fat Calipers to track your progress.

All this should get you on the road to "Education of yourself as a bodybuilder".

As for "Education of a Body Builder" get it for some of the underlying beliefs and just to read about the man himself. Anyone whose half interested in bodybuilding will know this material and so should you.

How to become a champion...
Review date: 2007-12-08 Rating: 10 out of 10

Written before he had made big in Hollywood, this book is a fascinating insight to the mind of a champion bodybuilder. Arnold reveals how from the tender age of 15 he made a conscious and determined effort to become the greatest bodybuilder in the world. By age 21 he had realised his ambition. It's a fascinating insight to the mindset of the young Schwarzenegger and how he systematically set out to achieve the goals he set for himself. The story he has to tell is genuinely exceptional and his achievements rival any other in the sporting world. This is a story of a man who transcended his sport in a way similar to the likes of Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. His account of events in frank and indeed inspirational.

His book is split into two halves, the first is an autobiographical account of his bodybuilding career and the second is a training guide - which in the 1960's might have been cutting edge but is obviously dated by today's standards. I think the second half of the book is a waste, if only because it takes up pages that could have been used to elaborate on events mentioned in the autobiographical section. You feel that there's so much detail that has been breezed over - details you'd be more than happy to read about. That said, perhaps the brevity of the first half of the book is what makes it such a compelling read. I've read this book many times now and whenever I start with the intention of reading just a few pages I find I can't put it down - it's such a surprise. But then the man has reached the top in every field he's put his mind to so why is it surprising that he's written an excellent autobiography? This book is a gem.

Well Worth the time to read!!!!!!!!

I was told by many people that, "if your going to read a book on body building, then this is the book to read". i was very sceptical by this comment, as out of all the body building books in the world this was the one he had rcommended. As a young body building i found this book very inspiring and motivational. It comes complete with basic routines to help you on your way as well as very informal nutritional information. For those unsure it is well worth the read.

Thanks, Arnie....

This is one of the unlikeliest of books, really. I'm not a big fan of Arnie's films. They're okay, but not my type of thing. So when a friend urged me - continually! - to read this, I was sceptical. I hugely enjoyed it though, and would recommend it wholeheartedly. I was interested by the section of the book that deals with exercise and nutrition, and that offered me a way into it. I expected that part of the book to be good, and it was. What surprised me though, was the quality of the autobiographical section. It gives a fascinating insight into the mindset, and the methods, of a very successful man. You may, like me, be somewhat ambivalent about the form of success that the author has achieved, but succeed he undoubtedly has. The clear and dedicated way he managed this is set out here in a simple, formulaic way. The clarity is such that it is impossible not to be affected in a very positive way. So, all in all, it's a great book. I've got great deal of admiration for its author now. It really is a very uplifting read.... Thanks, Arnie.

BIG (but not yet famous)
Review date: 2002-04-26 Rating: 8 out of 10

This book gives a very good insight into the man behind the muscles, although by no means an in depth profile it comes across as a very honest account of a young man determined to achieve his dreams. The book,as the title suggests, only covers the bodybuilding years prior to Arnie,s screen career but his personality and determination give a clear indication as to how he became one of the most unlikely of Hollywood stars. The second half of the book is taken up with exercise programmes and advice which may not appeal to those just after a biographical read but will be of great intrest to those hoping to follow in Arnie,s footsteps.
