Gentle fun with more than a hint of mischief
Review date: 2008-10-22 Rating: 8 out of 10
I read the Nicholas series as a child and was absolutely delighted when Phaidon reissued them in these gorgeous cloth bound hard back editions. I now read them to my children with all the glee that I remember from my childhood. They love them.
This is my least favourite of the series, not because it's not funny, it is, but because it doesn't have all the classic gang members who usually support Nicholas in his naughtiness. I missed Alec and his eating and Cuthbert the weed, although Bernie kind of makes up for them.
The illustrations are wonderful as ever. Nicholas goes to his first holiday summer camp and learns to catch fish, go on midnight treasure hunts and attempts to have his afternoon nap. The stories are just short enough to keep even young children's attention and full enough of mischief to keep the oldest child (i.e. me) enchanted.

Nicholas on Holiday
Review date: 2007-11-29 Rating: 10 out of 10
My son aged eight, was introduced to Nicholas by a supply teacher at his primary school.
Why we haven't come across Nicholas and his friends before is a mystery. Better late than never.
The book comprises stand alone short stories, rather than numbered chapters, which are tied together loosely by a theme. The characterisations are relatively simple, but the cast list is fairly substantial, so that everyone gets a fair share of what plot there is. The events that befall Nicholas and his friends had my boy rolling on the floor, holding his sides and almost unable to breathe, such was the mildly anarchic and often rather tame (by current standards) mischief they all got up to. Dare your child to read one story straight through without cracking up with wonderful uninhibited laughter.
The books themselves are capable of being read aloud on a gloomy winters day or clandestinely absorbed under the bedclothes late at night with the aid of a torch.
Beware the construction of the book, board and cloth on good quality paper. Pride in ownwership in my sons case has led to many ructions between him and his, admittedy grubby, three year old sister. Buy the whole set and they attain "holy relic" status. You have been warned.
Please, please just buy one and than return to Amazon and tell them that David said you should have the rest. They will be loved by children now and will surely become family heirlooms.
Petit Nicholas!

I bought all of the Nicholas books for my Husband. He reads it to me and we giggle with laughter. We absolutely love the sketchy illustrations. The original stories are short and very descriptive. You need very little imagination to be swept away with Nicholas and his adventures. The covers are traditional canvas and makes a difference from the usual hardback or cheap paperback covers. This is a special set and we are delighted to own it.
