Prepare to breathe a sigh of relief, JK Rowling fans. Chris Columbus, who so nearly fumbled the ball last year with the somewhat-flat PHILOSOPHER’S STONE has, just twelve months later, done a very special magic trick of his own, pulling the proverbial rabbit out of his directorial magician’s hat. I wandered into the cinema expecting another couple of hours of badly-acting children, over-acting adults, shoddy special effects and dreary, uninvolving storytelling. I came away entranced by a thrilling, chilling adventure, a film which finally explained to me just why the tales of Harry Potter are such a modern cultural phenomenon. It’s fair to say that the penny has finally dropped. As Ron Weasley himself might say, HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS is bloody brilliant.
