<UKTV’s Dave is thrilled to welcome Irish comedian and presenter Dara O Briain, as he takes a journey into the realms of pure logic in his brand new and exclusive series, ‘Dara O Briain: School Of launching Monday 16th April at 8pm on Dave.

The unlikely comedian-come-brainbox who studied maths and theoretical physics at University College, Dublin is on a mission to use all his knowledge and intuition to solve some tasty real-world brainteasers and conundrums. But instead of guesswork, Dara’s enlisting maths, physics, chemistry and logic, to solve a variety of problems.

Want to know how best to save a drowning man? Dara works out the optimum angle to jump into the river and pull them to safety. Want to know where to position yourself on a dance-floor to potentially get the highest number of kisses? Dara finds a way. Want to find out the most slices you can get out of a pizza if you’re only allowed to cut it three times? Dara’s your pizza-peculiar man!

Check out the Dara O Briain: School Of Hard Sums trailer here:

In each episode, Dara teams up with Oxford University maths professor Marcus du Sautoy and a variety of comedy guests including; Alex Horne, David O’Doherty and Jason Byrne, to dissect each puzzle and find out guaranteed ways to solve some serious quizzing complications!

BBC RECORDINGS BACK ON VINYL FOR RECORD STORE DAY – 21 st April 2012

Who can forget the thrill of first hearing those ethereal Doctor Who sound effects, and the Pavlov-like response they created during each subsequent episode? Those evocative electronic whooshes, sinister pulses and insistent beats, created by the brilliant BBC Radiophonic Workshop, drew us into an enthralling world of time travel and fabulous alien creatures. Now you can relive those glory days with the reissue of two classic vinyl LPs of the 1970s, released to coincide with Record Store Day.

Thanks to a collaboration between AudioGO and Discovery Records, aficionados of the Workshop can enjoy these limited-edition digitally-remastered sound effects from Doctor Who and several other 1970s TV series, produced on vinyl, with original album sleeve notes.

Doctor Who Sound Effects, first released in 1978, features the ambience of seven alien worlds as well as some extraordinary and extra-dimensional occurrences encountered on Earth. Add to these an audiogram of the Doctor’s own mind processes, TARDIS operations, and some weapons for self-defence, and your galactic safety is ensured.

Out of This World, first released in 1976, includes tracks of memorable sound effects created for a wide range of BBC radio and TV programmes in three categories: Outer Space which includes elements from Doctor Who; Magic and Fantasy, and Suspense and the Supernatural, many designed to evoke supernatural soundscapes rather than specific activities or locations, with titles such as Galactic Travel, Magic Carpet Flight and Phantoms of Darkness which are guaranteed to cast their spell.

Both titles are reissued with their original sleeve artwork and notes.

Yet another sad passing has been announced in the world of SciFi.

Ralph McQuarrie was an artist involved with the biggest and best in science fiction and fantasy movies. His work is used in Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future and many many more.

Please see his webiste to see what this great man has done and to pay your respects.

http://www.ralphmcquarrie.com/

The following comes from his website:

It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of Ralph McQuarrie.
People say you should never meet your heroes. Ralph was the exception to that rule. We were all fans of his amazing art long before we were blessed with his friendship. But once you got to know Ralph it was impossible not to become a fan of Ralph the man.
Ralph was a very special person for many more reasons than his undeniable brilliance with a brush. He was an especially kind, sensitive, deep, modest, funny and fascinating gentleman. And as fine a role model as any one could have wished for.

His influence on design will be felt forever. There’s no doubt in our hearts that centuries from now amazing spaceships will soar, future cities will rise and someone, somewhere will say…

“that looks like something?Ralph McQuarrie?painted.”

A decade after his heroic defeat of the monstrous Kraken, Perseus is attempting to live a quieter life as a village fisherman and the sole parent to his 10-year-old son, Helius. Meanwhile, a struggle for supremacy rages between the gods and the Titans. Dangerously weakened by humanity’s lack of devotion, the gods are losing control of the imprisoned Titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father of the long-ruling brothers Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. The triumvirate had overthrown their powerful father long ago, leaving him to rot in the gloomy abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon that lies deep within the cavernous underworld.?

Perseus cannot ignore his true calling when Hades, along with Zeus’s godly son, Ares, switch loyalty and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus. The Titans’ strength grows stronger as Zeus’s remaining godly powers are siphoned, and hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of the warrior Queen Andromeda, Poseidon’s demigod son, Agenor, and fallen god Hephaestus, Perseus bravely embarks on a treacherous quest into the underworld to rescue Zeus, overthrow the Titans and save mankind.

Solaris is delighted to announce that sales of the critically-acclaimed, New York Times bestselling Pantheon series by James Lovegrove have now topped 100,000.

In a remarkable coup for a military-SF series, the killer blend of high-octane action and worlds dominated by ancient religions, including New York Times bestseller The Age of Odin , has been a massive hit. The series is now set to continue with three new titles.

The series focuses on the central question of ‘what if the Gods of Mythology were not only real but played a direct role in mankind’s lives?’ Created as alternative histories that can be read as stand-alone novels or enjoyed as a collective, Lovegrove revitalises deities of old with hard-nosed military science fiction and fascinating re-imaginings of our world.

This April will see the publication of the next in the series, Age of Aztec , which envisages a world where the Aztecs defeated the Conquistadors and then spread their empire across the Earth. As the apocalypse looms, this regime of ruthless oppression and regular human sacrifice is now openly defied by a masked vigilante known as the Conquistador.

This year also sees the publication of the first ebook-only novella in the series, Age of Anansi, with the Age of Voodoo due for print publication in 2013.

The Age of Odin featured on the New York Times bestseller immediately upon release last year. The series also includes Age of Ra and Age of Zeus.
